Default I hate wires... help, please.

Hey guys. I have a 93 cummins and I went out to start her up this morning, I turned the key and right away noticed the "wait to start" light didn't come on. Then I looked up to see thick white smoke comming from the back of the hood. I quickly turned off the key and pulled the hood release cable and the dang thing broke. Had to cut the cable and pulled it with chanel locks and opened the hood. By then it was done smoking, so I have no clue what fried. Anybody have a thought???

Could be a couple of different things but my guess is that the grid heaters may have stuck on. Does it run?

No. It doesn't run. Turning the key does nothing. There is nothing that looks burned or anything. Judging by the smoke comming from the back of the hood, I'd say it is some thing on the fire wall. and it smelled really electrical.

The ignition buzzer goes off, but everything else is dead- gauges, stereo, etc.

You got me. This is my first diesel and I've only had it less than a month. I have everything to learn. Guess I'd better get to town and find a Haynes manual. Humbled I am.

Someone here should be able to help. Probably better than a Hanes manual anyway. Sit tight and wait for a better answer.

Another thing is the starter contacts could be fried. Common problem.

hmmm. Well, if the buzzer and dome light didn't come on, it otherwise acts like a dead battery. Does anyone know what the solenoid lookin thing located pretty much center on the back of the engine compartment, right above the engine is? That's about where the smoke came from.

If that's the starter solenoid, it's probably the problem. Back out for more investigating.

since you had smoke i wouldnt suspect battery but if you seem to think that it is battery remove it and take it down to advance auto parts or auto zone and they will check it for you for free, just to be sure.
starter solenoid you can locate on your own without prolem.folow your wires from battery it should be about (pinky finger size wire {if you have tiny fingers})and it should bolt to round looking plastic part that will have another same size wire on the other side and also will have one small wire and that is signal wire from ignition switch.
now that i am thinking about it solenoid should be located on top of starter with two big wires coming to it under one nut and small wire.check out basic stuff first.
goodluck with problem
