Default 03 Cummins will crank but no start..HELP!!!

Hey I'm new to the forum but not diesels. I'm active duty Navy and work on them all the time. Ours aren't common rail though...Owned the truck for a few months. Came home for lunch one day and wouldn't start. Crank but not start. I have an Edge Juice. I unhooked it. Didn't start. Came out the next morning fired right up with Edge on! Changed fuel filter. Ran fine for a week or so. Now same problem. Came home for lunch, crank but no start. Came back that evening. Unhooked Edge. Fired right up! Same thing next day. I talked to a retired Engineman Chief that works at local dodge dealership in Millington. He said he had one come in like mine and cleaned the grounds and solved it. I read a search an here and an 02 had the same problem(not the same engine though.) Cleaned my main battery grounds. Started right up. Next day, same problem. Ran jumper from negative batter to intake ground on the engine. No start. Ran ground from batter to engine hoist. No go. Vent the transfer pump. Plenty of flow. Clean fuel. I'm thinking an injector is bleeding back by or something internal on the fuel rail like relief valve or something. I'm really not liking these common rails. I've orders the cap from Miller to check the injectors one by one. Its not here yet. I've heard once you pull a high pressure line they are really prone to leaking. Is there any way to diagnose the fuel rail from home? I'm very expirienced with electronics so don't worry about talking over my head. How do I jump the shut down valve? How do I make sure the main pump isn't bad without ruining it in the process? Truck has 160,000 on it. Mods are Edge juice, ice box intake with BIG BLUE filter, straight pipes, trailer brake. I'm ruling the edge out right now because I've unhooked it completely and the truck didn't start. I looked for obvious exposed/broken wires. I'm at a loss and on enlisted pay I can't afford the dealership bill right now. Any ideas?? Thank you in advance for your help.

changed oil couple of weeks ago. Maintanance isn't issue. Filter I pulled out looked fine. I don't think this was the cause. Transfer pump is the one on the side of the engine, not in tank. Have thought maybe its just not putting out quite enough. I'm unsure of the test to do and don't have a graduated cylinder to perfom the test. I could probably get a "borrowed" one from one of the corpsman on base. With the vent its really shooting the fuel out! Engine is 5.9 HO 6SPD. One inactive code 0193. Fuel Rail Pressure High Doesn't make the engine light come on. Didn't know it was there till I did the test. And shoot me now I don't have the guage for lp fuel side. No after market filter either. When it does run it runs like a balded *** ape! So I don't think its the main pump either.

Searched through the site and found another 03 with similar issues. Sprayed starting fluid in it to rule out electrical(I really don't like doing that to diesels). Started. I'd still like to check the fuel rail. How do I do that? Thx

Inactive code though. I never noticed it come on so it might have come up at start up and went away before I was going down the road....I'm a guage watcher. It's habit. It's what I do in the Navy...I started it with starting fluid. Man I hate doing that. It still could be the transfer pump though I guess. I think they are supposed to put out 5-9psi. With all the flow when you vent it off I don't think that's the case though.

So when it runs it always runs just fine? Mine was acting the same way but it would also be real low on power at times, have trouble keeping speed up hills. Turned out it was my transfer pump. Got one from upstate diesel on here, its been great ever since

I'm thinking about getting a new transfer pump to rule that out...

yeah when it runs, it runs great! Just starts when it wants to. It's not all the time either, which makes it super hard to diagnose....

Just a thought, I have a GM and if the security light is on it will not start the first time. If there is a factory security, it may be acting up. My niece had a Pontiac that was giving her problems. She would be doing 70 on the interstate, and the car would just cut off. Took it the the dealer 3-5 times and they could not figure it out. She called me and I was playing 20 questions with a "sterotypical blond" without a clue. The only thing that I could come up with was the security light would flash just before it shut down every time. Dealer replaced the security module and no more problems.

Has alarm. No security light issues. No code for it. Starts right up in the mornings. Once it gets up to temp it won't start with out ether...

How do I test to see if there's pressure on the return side? How do I check the relief valve on the rail?

Mikeball, Sounds pretty common to trans. pump failure. I would check my pressure and flow at the pump before going any farther! I'll be glad to post all of the alldata and the (if the scanner will work) the bosch common rail tech book!

If your going to be upgrading your truck such as a Smarty or Injectors Id do atleast a Raptor Pump. Stock Carters are Junk
