Default Auto trans starts in second gear after stop

HELP This is my first post. I just purchased a 1996 Dodge SLT 2500 LB with auto trans. When I drove it home I noticed that after coming to a stop then taking off again it sounded like it was kind stalling while actually it was still in second gear. I have notice it does not always do this but most off the time. If I come to a stop and turn the engine off and start it again it will start of in first and shifts normal again. Any ideas or experience with this please let me know.

Do you know how hard the previous owner drove it? I had a bully dog set on extreme on my truck and developed the same problem by stomping on the gas too hard taking off with the stock trans. I did it too often and I lost first gear.

I probably could have rebuilt it but just put in another factory reman trans.

I also wonder if you might have some sludge in the trans getting stuck in places it shouldn't seeing how it doesn't do it every time for you. How many miles are on the truck? Do you know if the trans was serviced at all?

Default Not sure

From what the owner told me he bought it from a women teacher who drove it for 90k he then purchased it and had it for 9 years. He drove it on commute to work "Fireman" he said it did not even have a hitch on it so he put one and a fifth wheel so he could pull his dads trailer once in a while. His wife then used it to pull a concessions trailer for a year on weekends but gave it up. Truck has 190K he said he had tranny rebuild like 4-5 years ago, brakes done, front end done, lift pump changed and injector pump tested ok, and the manifold heater changed. Thats about all I know. Truck is all stock no alteration at all. Thanks

You need to get it to someone thats got a good scan tool because it sounds like Gov Pressure Issue.

I believe it's probably a solenoid, when it does it pull over and shut it off. When you restart it ought to start in low. My 02 does this and the trans guy said it's about a 200 dollar fix. They have an updated solenoid for it.
96, is that a rh or a re? I really don't know.
