I have a fuel leak. Diesel is leaking from the grommet on the top of the fuel filter canister. The replacement fuel filter canister costs over $1000 from the Dodge dealer.

Does anyone have any ideas that cost a lot less than buying the OEM replacement assembly?

go to your local filter supply house tell them what you have going wrong, and they should be able to set you up with something, that will fit or just need a little modifying to fit, i did mine on my 96 i now have mine mounted off the frame rail, easier to change the filter now

 

Haven't been able to find anything locally. It looks like I will have to get something off of the internet.

Also, you dont have to go factory with this - just because something is OEM doesnt necessarily mean its good. You could mount an aftermarket Racor fuel filter either on the framerail or in the factory location and it would work just fine. No need to panic here.

No panic here. Where would I find a Racor fuel filter? And would I have to replace the lift pump as well?

 

A Racor fuel filter is available at any number of diesel parts places. And no you wont have to replace your lift pump if you dont want to (probably should if you intend on keeping the truck) but you may have to get a big line kit and move your fuel filter to the framerail. I will dig up the appropriate p/n if you want to go that way.

Again, what part of the fuel filter housing is leaking? I have some spare parts and may have what you need (or someone else might). Please post a pic or two.

On the top of the fuel filter canister there is a round apparently rubber grommet through which passes the wiring for the preheater. It is leaking through that grommet.

 

Sorry, ill have to look at my 98 to see if its the same. But yeah, ive read that fuel leaking here is a common problem and it causes you to lose prime, resulting in the hard starts.
