Default Major Problems?

Hi, I discovered your site a week ago trying to find out why our truck just up and died on the road. Just as I read here about the fuel lift pump the shop calls and tells me that that is what the problem was. Just before I went to pick up the truck today the shop calls and tells me that they test drove the truck and now it wont go out of second gear. The diesel mechanics are slammed and so it will take a few more days to find out what the problem is. They also said there is a good chance that it could be and electronic issue in which case it would not be covered under warranty? We bought the truck last yr with manufactures warranty and never had any problems. Except that when I test drove it up a steep hill and stopped it did not want to start driving again. Salesman made me feel kind of dumb, told me I had to floor it to get the turbo going in order for the truck to go up the hill. wtf It was not even coasting when I took my foot off the break. Was that the beginning of a transmission problem?
If you have any answers for me please post. Hubby is out of town and I have to make all the decisions about the repairs.
Thanks in advance. oh, the truck is a 3500 dodge Cummings diesel (laramie)

Does it blow a lot of black smoke before it makes power?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

When you say it won't go out 2nd gear, you mean it won't make enough power to be able to upshift, or the transmission isn't letting?

no, it never has. I don't know what it does now as it is in the shop. I towed my camper with it one time last yr and as I was trying to get going the truck did not move an inch. As a matter of fact it blew out some smoke that had a horrible smell. I played around with the stick and the tow button and it finally moved forward. I never used it to tow again. (like using my dodge dually for towing better anyway)

Tow button? Must be an auto? If so, what year? Can the engine rev free to 2200 rpm no problems w/ the tranny in P? Horrible smell from the exhaust, smell like honey, raw fuel, burnt oil?

just called the mechanic again and he told me that the truck is not capable to start off in first gear and so they have to floor it to get it going and it will only drive in second. He assures me it's not the turbo and there is no smoke

yes, auto 04
Yes it can rev. (sets off car alarms though -big *** muffler)

Something is causing it to go into limp mode. I left my t/c lockup switch on going downhill once. Not saying it's the problem your having, but it gave the same symptoms. The CEL (Check Engine Light) came on, w/ the tone, and it down shifted out of o/d into 2nd. I stopped and took off again and it took everything it had to get going cause it was stuck in 2nd gear. Where did you take it to, out of curiosity?

the dodge dealer ship. Come to think of it, it also does not drive faster then 85 miles an hr. Dealer told me that the truck was set for towing ( I told hubby then that there was something wrong with that truck.) BTW, no warning light ever came on. Not even before it broke down last week.

You'd think it would throw a code w/ the CEL if something like this happens. Of course w/ a Dodge, it would go off all the time!!!!!!!!!

fluids where good. We change them and the filters every 6 month. Got to up here in Alaska. also, the mechanic just called back and told me that there was a fuse missing, something to do with relay and that the truck seems to work now that they have replaced it. I told him about the truck not going faster then 80(almost redlining btw) and being told it was set for towing by the salesman and now he is taking it for a drive himself. We'll see what he comes back with.

BTW wildbill, thanks a lot for communicating with me about this. At least I can ask the shop guys the right questions. It almost looks like I know what I'm talking about LOL
