No Dash Lights/Melted Wires 01 Dodge Cummins
I got the dash off the other night and have a few melted wires, at the fuse box the green connector has four wires in it the orange one has melted the coating off to within about a 1/4 inch of connector so that is problem one. Behing the speedometer there is about 6 orange wires melted as well but they are far enough away from the connector that i can splice them or replace with heavier gauge wire. I stopped by dodge to try and buy the pigtail to replace connector i even gave them the number off the connector B1 3 10799 but they told me that isnt a connector and tried to get me to buy the $1800 harness. My question is could i just cut the connector out and put inline fuse and bypass the fuse block?

cory, this is not related to your problem.....but if you already have the dash off, you may as well go ahead and replace your heater core. Doing so will save you a lot of work and headache in the future.

i tore apart the dash to see how bad the wiring is, all the orange wires in the cab have melted, one of them goes into the speedometer connector and the rest go throughout the entire harness and are all melted. Does anyone no where i can pick up the connectors that crimp on all the wires that fit into the various connections throughout the dash, i can get them out but wont be able to reuse. Also what gauge of wire should i replace this with since i am in there i would like to do as much as possible to prevent this again.
Ok so i got the connectors from a Chevy dealer at no charge so that was good, i was wanting to make sure they crimped right but they are not crimped like the standard connectors i will try and post a picture later of the connector. They are the connectors that are in the plastic plug that hook into the fuse block if that helps anyone. Does anyone know what tool i need to do these with? Also a side question i have read about it before but havent been able to find it my blower motor only works on high, i think i remember it is a resistor somewhere that needs replaced, does anyone have the part number for that i think it would be easiest to fix that while i have my dash off.

I have no idea what kind of connector your are talking about, but in the past Ive used a paperclip to get the contacts out of connectors.
As for the blower motor, the problem "should" be the resistor pack. When I have a chance I will check my FSM for you.

On the blower resistor, if you go into an auto parts store and ask for one for your truck it will come up as a dealer only item. If you pull the resistor and take it in with you they can look through the catalog they will have showing pictures and it's in there under a Toyota. Sorry I don't have the number or remember the exact model of Toyota anymore.
Dr. Evil i wasnt sure how to explain it but i think were talking about the same thing i am replacing the contacts and the crimp on it looks like it would take a special tool, but i havent had alot of time to try a normal wire crimper with it yet. I did see the post about heater core and i will look into that once the wiring is fixed but before i get the dash in and thanks for the advice.

The link is to the style of contacts i have to replace, Is there a special tool for crimping these? Also what gague of wire should i use i believe it is 18ga in there now should i just put that back in or go with lower gauge?

ok...that helps a lot. Yes, there is a special tool to get those out of the connectors. an electronics parts store should be able to help you if youre stuck.
But, I am pretty sure you can use a paperclip. If you look real close at the metal pin, there should be a small tab (on the underside - you cant see it in that pic) that holds the pin in the connector. if you slide a paper clip (from the right direction) you should be able to push the little tab up and then pull the pin out of the connector. Takes a bit to get the hang of it. Give it a try and see if it works.

Ya those are common connectors to every kind of vehicle on the road so they are easy to come by. The tab will be on the wire side of the connector and it pulls out that direction also. I always had to use a small nail myself cause the paper clips bent to easy but it's all the same concept.
If your going with the idea of hooking your headlights up through a relay I would say use the same gauge wire that is in there. It won't be carrying any current once your done so it will be fine. If your gonna leave it as it is definitely go bigger.

Thanks for all the help i got the dash lights fixed, i had a few problems the first time i drove it with speedometer and windows not working. I got a chance at lunch to work on it and checked all connections again and everything is working right now, not sure what caused that just hope it all stays working now. Thanks again for all the help.
