Default 2001 24valve died while driving

Hey Guys,

I need some help! On my way in to work today my truck just shut off doing 45-50 mph. I didn't see what the fuel pressure was at when it happened. I had the fuel light on and the DTE said 40 miles left which I know I shouldn't have let it get that low but I needed to make it to payday to get fuel. It just died all of a sudden no smoke no hesitation just quit running. I put in about 5 gallons of fuel in it and tried to crank it up but it wont turn over at all. I have no codes on the ecm or pcm either which I thought was weird. Is my injection pump toast? It's pouring right now so I haven't cracked the fuel lines to bleed them and i'm by myself too so I need some advice as to anything else I am missing or what I need to get back on the road. Any help is much appreciated..

When you say " it won't turn over at all", are you meaning that the starter isn't turning the engine, or it is just not starting when cranked?

You might have a bad lift pump, but usually what happens if the LP fails the CP3 pump starts doing the work of both pumps and it soon fails also. And there is the possibility that it has an electrical issue. You should plug it into an OBD II scanner and see if any fault codes are stored in the ECM, as that will get you headed in the right direction.

Hey man,

thanks for the advice but but I have a vp44 pump and my lift pump is still good I can hear it running with the key on I called a buddy of mine and he said to swap out the cam sensor as that’s most likely the problem. He might be wrong but for 60 bucks versus 1500-2000 I’m gonna try the sensor. I’m not showing any codes either I can check by turning the key to “on” 3 times and it’ll show any pcm or even codes on the dash but nothing comes up at all. That’s why I’m so confused about what’s going on

Well, I don't know how any sensor can completely fail without throwing a code but if that's what you want to try I guess it is worth a shot in the dark. Years ago I had an old 83 Ford with the 6.9 diesel in it that did the same thing you described and it turned out to be a blown fuse. The fuse was used for a couple different electrical components and one of them was the in-line fuel heater which had failed. It was a bear to track down the cause but all it required was unplugging the power source to the heater, and then it fired right up. So, what I am getting at is check all the fuses.

Heyman,

So today I checked all the fuses related to fuel or engine pumps ignition etc. and didn't find any that were blown. I did a quick google search and some forums mentioned the ASD relay could be bad so I tried to swap it out with the ac clutch relay and crank it over for a few seconds but nothing happened. At this point I'm a little frustrated and scratching my head as to what else I can check. I'm in denial about having to buy a IP and I guess I'm just reaching for straws and not really wanting to replace the pump. I don't really have the cash to have someone do it I'll have to pull it and do a swap on it or should I send it to get rebuilt and put the same one back in? I have heard pros and cons about doing either one. I appreciate your help this far, any ideas where I can get an injection pump cheaper than 1,000??

The IP would be a last resort if it were my truck because this isn't typical of a pump failure, well, unless the truck was blowing an excessive amount of black smoke out the exhaust before it died. Does the wait to start light come on when you key to on? If not you probably have a faulty ECU. You might try a new crankshaft position sensor but truthfully, I would have thought it would have thrown a fault code. BTW, sometimes keying the ignition to get codes doesn't show all of them and it requires an OBD II reader to pull up all of them. Maybe you should research a good diesel shop near you instead of just throwing random parts at the problem.

Yes the wait start light comes on for a few seconds like normal and everything appears to be normal until trying to crank it over it just never turns over. If I try for a long period of time 10-15 seconds the check gauges light comes on for a few seconds then goes away. I have replaced the camshaft sensor yesterday I didn't know I had a crankshaft sensor on my 01 I'll look into that. I'm leaning toward a IP as I said before fuel is getting to it but not going though it. I wish I knew a good diesel mechanic around here I live in south Florida and its a sunny state full of shady people.

If the WTS light only comes on for a second or so and then goes out I think the ECU has failed. That is one of the symptoms of failure, if it doesn't stay on long enough for a heat-up on a cold start. I realize that the WTS light doesn't stay on as long in the 5.9L compared to the 6.7L but it should stay on longer than that.
