Can anyone tell me the symptoms of an injector pump thats not timed right? Will it run at all? Run rough? Smoke? If it is out of time, how to time it?

If you removed the pump drive gear housing from the timing cover like the pump R&R instructions usually say, you could easily be off a few teeth (or more.)

It's been a while since I've done it, but the first thing I did was ensure #1 was at TDC on the compression stroke by pulling the valve cover and watching for the valves to close and the timing marks on the damper & scale to line up. Then, with a dental pick or seal pick, you should be able to feel the "Y" mark at the top of the cam gear. It's 180 out from the dot used to line the cam & crank gears up. There's a matching "Y" mark on the IP drive gear. Center that on the IP drive gear housing flange (count & mark teeth on each side), then lower the IP & housing assembly so the marked teeth are flush with the timing cover. Drop it in place & install the housing bolts without rotating the IP gear, and you *should* be set.
