I just bought a 01 that is having same issue. Truck has 78000 miles on it. It sat for an extended amount of time. Truck smoked like a train when first stared. I removed the fuel filter to find almost an inch of what looked like snot. Cleaned filter cup and replaced filter. This helped greatly with smoke. Now truck has dead pedal. Purchased recommended in tank fuel pump from advanced auto. Removed tank and cleaned it well. With pump in tank I have Bypassed lift pump. Still I have dead pedal,and four codes that appear when I cycle the the key three times 1693,0230,1689,0216. I have disconnected both batteries for 30 min and reset the apps sensor. Didn't change a thing. My question is with pump in tank and lift pump not connected will this cause problems with the computer by it not recognizing the lift pump? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For starters, the "recommended" lift pump is really not what is recommended on here.
#1 lift pump for most people here is going to be a FASS fuel system,
#2 on the importance list is going to be to install a fuel pressure gauge, and watch it, like a hawk!
No more than 20 psi, no less than 15 psi.
From the sounds of it, your vp44 is going bad. 0216 is a vp "death" code, mix that with a dead pedal and you have a real good chance of a vp that is on its way out.
If you are replacing the vp, it would be idiotic to not install a good lift pump, and a good fuel pressure gauge, none of these are cheap. But it should be your last time throwing a vp in it for a while

what would be the best solution , as far as the lift pump is concerned . bypass the pump in tank or get another fuel tank that doesn't have the pump in it? I have pretty much figured that the injection pump has to be replaced . This will be the last time for a long while I hope. after 3 fuel pumps (in tank) and 2 injection pumps., I'm just about done !!! is it possible , or would it help to put a lift pump where they usually have one . Where is the best place to run the wiring ? As far as it functioning like it should. Thanks

But a FASS fuel system and a ddt sump, you will then have a completely different fuel system from the tank to the vp, between both of them it will have all the hoses needed, the FASS will come with its own wiring harness that ties into the engine harness on the driver side of the engine, back about 4/5 the way, and down 3/5 of the way you will find a grey plug that the FASS hooks too, it will also hook to the battery, it also comes with its own fuel filter/ water separator

I Re-checked my wiring last night, I found the grey shielded wire with 2 wires in it , was pretty toasty in the middle. It's the one that goes from injection pump to the ecm. It was not shielded for 6" on both sides. I replaced the wire with a protected (heat) wire from napa, but this wire was not shielded. Does it matter? After I replaced it , reset apps etc... It fired right up, better than it did, idles fine 14 psi fuel pressure ,when you accelerate ,1000 rpm that's it pressure climbs a little. I really don't want to replace the IP if its not out. Could it be the CKP ? it's a bear to get to. Can I test it someway ? Still banging my head

Well after many headaches, from banging my head, I believe I have found my problem. The data link wire ( the grey shielded wire) had been getting warm over the years , I replaced it , and the connections to the injection pump. and presto . I do think that I'll try to find a new injection pump wire connector though. Thanks for all the help . I'll still be looking to get the fass system pretty soon .
