Info: 01 cummins 24 valve with 291.xxx on her 3rd owner. Original owner says he had the rings, rods, bearings , and head gasket rebuilt ( just cuz he wanted to). It has a brand new larger than stock holset turbo. Car fax shows oil changes every 3k as this was used as a company truck. I recently perchased it about a month ago. I have done alot of regular maintenance. Oil change,air filter,fuel filter, coolant flush,running diesel kleen,etc...


Problem: when i start up my rig after sitting a while it blows white smoke. Cold or warm outside it blows some white smoke and its stinky. I usually let it run about 5-6 min than take off. As soon as i put it in drive it smokes really bad! Taking off down my street its just rediculous looks like my cars on fire. This lasts about 5 min of driving than it stops smoking. Opp temps are usually right between 140-190. Than when it hits 190 an i get on her it rolls black smoke (and actually smells like burned diesel). It runs great drives even better. When i put it in reverse it surges till i give it just a little throttle and it clears up (same in drive). My power is all there and its way faster than my brothers stock 01.


Codes: i am/ have gotten 3 codes. I did key on key off and got p0123 and p1693(companion). I checked companion and its p0216. I readjusted my apps and reset it now im getting p0122 and p0216.


Assumptions:my trucks chipped? And puts out alot of fuel which is unburned till it hits opp temp?
my lift pump doesnt put out enough fuel psi when warming up starving my vp44?
My injectors are leaking/loosing pop/cracked?
My apps is bad causing the vp44 to run funny till it warms up?
My map sensor is bad? Or iat sensor?
I have a blown head gasket and dont know it?(looks brand new)
Coolant is burning somewhere?(level hasnt moved)
My turbo is leaking oil which burns out the exhaust?
Burning oil somewhere? (Oil level is perfect)


More info. If i start my truck for 5 min or so an feel my vp44 its hot! When i drive it at 190 all day and feel it its cooler? When its colder out i hear my turbo spooling loud. After warmed up i can blow black smoke no problem. My mpg is satisfying.

Questions:is it possible to run a bigger turbo with stock injectors?or without a chip?
How can you tell if you have a chip?
If its running more boost with out a chip is that bad?
I dont believe my vp44 is going bad cuz it rolls coal indicating alot of fuel?
Can the p0216 be triggered by bad injectors? Or a bad apps?

Some other useful information: the fuel filter i used was a duralast autozone kind. My buddy (knows alot about cummins) poured some atf with the new filter to clean everything out.im using rotella oil with mopar filter. The guy i bought from said he took the engine out to get all the work done.he took it to a friends shop. And was (on a budget) he didnt seem to know much about the truck. He sold it to me cuz he bought a brand new cummins.
