New here.
I stumbled across this site while looking for possible 4-banger diesels for my pickup/project. Turns out I found some great information right off the bat, regarding the Mercedes I5 (OM617 Turbo).
I was planning on dropping a Chevy 6.2L (non-turbo) Diesel in my 1987 Dodge D50 4x4 Dumptruck. When I came across the thread on here where a member stuck a OM617 in his Jeep and it got me thinking that'd be a much better approach for my project in terms of weight, mileage, etc.
I'm no stranger to diesels, my '84 D50 had a 2.5L Intercooled Turbo Diesel in it for years (Mitsubishi 4D56T) until it suffered a catastrophe that destroyed the #2 sleeve (never could find a replacement sleeve) so I swapped it out for a Chrysler 273 Small Block and a TF904 transmission with a KM100/NP203 Transfer Case Doubler. Sure do miss the 5-Speed though.
Figured I'd join to get some information on the OM617 swap for my '87 D50, or other possible alternatives. As much as I'd love a 4BT, that's not in the cards at the moment (otherwise my Dakota would have a 4BT/NV4500/205 )
