and to get back on topic i'd definately look into the tranny first.... i run a Goerend tranny that i got from Pure Diesel Power and am VERY pleased with it. Dave is top notch and has awesome customer support...

x2....

At least a TC and VB. I will say though I have been running my smarty on SW#5 for a while know (around 15k miles) and you can ask Ben, Steph, or Jason... i run the hell out of it and it is holding up just fine so far... I know it's time is limited but so far so good. If you keep it down to SW#3 I feel the 48RE will hold out for the life of the truck unless you are pulling some CRAZY loads.

depending on the mileage and how the stock tranny has been treated Dave or any other tranny manufacture can get you a good converter and a valve body and it'll last alot longer than normal. the stock converters are crap. plain and simple they are THE weak link of the tranny's we all have. Goerend Transmission Incorporated dave has a GREAT writeup on how a converter works and goes into detail on how the stock design is flawed. the new valve body will give more fluid pressure, causing less slippage and better holding power for the stock clutches to last. a firm shifting transmission will always perform and last longer than a smooth shifting (more like slipping into the gear) transmission.

not sure about just the converter being enough but I know when I got all my goerend parts converter vavle body and 1-2 band apply lever it was all under 2k yea its a lot of money but I spent 4k on a rebuilt stock trans that I just blew up again and again.... sometimes its just worth it to save alil longer and deal with stock till it can be done up right. sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear but its my opinion. good luck with the truck either way though you seem to have a good start.
