New guy from Idaho
Hi! Peter from the McCall Idaho. I am working on a frame off restoration of a 1985 Chevy K30 Crew Cab that I have converted to a short bed. I am looking for information that will help with my choice of engine. Either a GM 6.5l TD or a Cummins 12v. Still undecided. The frame has been painted so I am at a stand still until I decide,

I have done a little research. The swap is pretty straight forward other than to simplify it I would then have to run a Dodge NV4500 and a Dodge style NP 205. Not that I am opposed other than it becomes less a GM
I have talked with Ken and Dawna at Auto World and I like their engine crossmember. I would also put on a 1" body lift to help if I go that route.

Id go with the 12v definitely. We owned both on the farm and the 12v engine outlasted the 6.5 by a long shot, and also outpulled. But the body/frame of the dodge fell apart completely while the GM did pretty good for how much they were both abused!
If you want to keep it more GM, you should look at a 6.6 Duramax. A lot more power and aftermarket support than the 6.5, but a lot more wiring too. The wiring is why I "voted" for the 12 valve, that aspect should be simpler. It's your truck, just keep us updated
