do alot of reading. all of the big three have their pro's and they all have their cons. the main thing is look at the truck and make sure it's what YOU want. not what someone else wants...... in the 24valves they are notorious for losing a liftpump and causing the injector pump to die. ask if the PO has any knowledge on this and see if you can get a shop to do a fuel pressure test on it. other than that HAVE FUN!!!!

thanks alot guys. and he hasnt had any probs with the lift pump at all the biggest prob i got with getting it tested is that its 3 hours away from me its in a small town with no shop and itshad to set up times i can meet him and he can meet me so idk if ill b able to get the truck in and have the fuel pressuer checked. and i have debated for a while what i really wanted but i think iv *** to a conclusion on the cummins. what r sum of the first mods i can do to get this thing to smoke? its got a hypertech programer already.

all these are MY PERSONAL OPINION!!! take it as you will

1. build a truck for power and the smoke will come.
2. GET GAUGES FIRST!!! Fuel pressure, EGT, Tranny temp if automatic, boost if manual
3. Get 4" Exhaust. it'll help lower the egt's and help spoolup
4. look into a nice air intake, afe, icebox, K&N all have a few nice setups.
5. after all these mods and using the hypertec WATCH THE FUEL PRESSURE. if it drops below 10PSI it's time to look into either replacin' the stock lift pump with another that won't last or going to a nice aftermarket setup like AirDog or FASS or a cheaper Glacier kit. any of those will be FAR superior to the stock pump.
6. if the power/smoke isn't where you want it then look into programmers.
7. if it's an automatic then any time running a programmer will be borrowed time. they don't like anything other than stock power. i know this first hand.

hope this helps.
