Default new guy hoping for real help

new to the diesel world, and having problems. 04 duramax (LB7 engine code) engine light on, code says EGR, mechanic says take it off and clean it with carb cleaner. is this good or bad, and where is it located. any help would be appreciated.:

the 04 lb7 engine didn't have the egr crap. are you sure you have a lb7 or an lly engine? check the 8th digit of your trucks vin # if 1=lb7, if 2=lly. oh yea, welcome!

then your truck does not have the egr. you need to see what codes are active on your truck. you can go to a parts house like advanced auto or autozone, they should be able to check your truck for codes. just write down what codes you see and lets us know.

p0307 cylinder 7 misfire p1404 exhaust gas recirculation error egr #2. that was the codes from a oreillys autoparts.

check the wiring harness that is running across the altenator bracket to see if any of the wires have damaged insulation on the which can cause a short. if you find any, you can repair the wires with butt splice stac-on and for added protection against water, use some shrink wrap insulation. this can be found at radio shack. you might find it at orielly's.
