Default Maryland Diesel

This is Willie from Maryland. I’m just starting to realize, and finally have some cash, to upgrade my truck. I bought it new in 2000 and now with 175,000K miles I want to get some advice on what upgrades are good for towing, and also safe for the engine. I have recently installed gauges, EGT, Boost, Trans Temp, and a Large trans temp cooler. I have been towing a 27.5' boat down to the Bay and up to the mountain lakes. I was told before I do so to get gauges to know how the truck was reacting.

When I first got the truck I installed a Hypertech chip to give it an extra little bit, not much but back then it was cheap. I am looking to take the next steps to both Exhaust and Intake. Maybe a low-grade chip, but I’m cautious in putting that much power to such an old truck. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. I am most interested in Towing and just having something that will last.

I would also like to see if anyone has used smaller Diesel engines in a VW sand rail? I would like to make a hill climber or just a street legal buggy that would be some fun. Any suggestions on engine models and transmissions? I would appreciate the help as well.

-Willie
