(dodgeram082500) lives outside of Emory. I may also be moving up that direction before long. You'll have to come hang out with us at Redline in Caddo Mills some weekend.
As for why they made a truck that gets that kind of mileage, when we all know it's capable of more... we have the EPA and the "greenies" to thank for that. I have said all along that the 6.7s could have been tuned to do what they wanted rather than saddling them with 100+lbs. of crap that kills the fuel mileage due to the regen cycle. Not to mention the EGR recycles soot back into the intake, hindering efficiency even further. I'll be nice and not go off on a tangent about dirty turbos, with vanes sticking, the egr bypass valve clogging to the point that it gives up. The ONLY time my truck has been to the shop for anything other than recalls and flash updates, has been emissions equipment related.
The Smarty S-67 running the ME14 software, and on level 5(90 hp tune) will literally embarrass an identical bone stock truck, and do it with NO smoke. Not to mention mileage is greatly improved, provided you can keep your foot out of it. That proves to me that it CAN be done with software as opposed to the DPF, and EGR.
If you want, I'll take you for a ride in mine some weekend when I'm up there, and let you see side by side what the 6.7 is capable of with a minimal amount of effort.

When It's not in regen l like it. Has plenty of power to pull my 11,000lbs of toys and do it at 70 easy. I'm not very impressed with the fuel mileage dependability though. Today you might get 23mpg empty but tomorrow is 13 doing the exact same thing you did the day before.
Welcome to DB. I'm in your neck of the woods quite often, and Lucus

What kinds of mileage are you getting? I assuming your still running the filter and EGR. Does the smarty help it from gong into regen as much?
I'm not looking at doing any real big mods to this thing. Mostly I'm waiting for the 3/36000 to end Almost half way there with 14,000 on the clock and then I would like to do a Filter delete just to get the mileage consistent and back up to where it should be. This is my first Ram and been pretty pleased so far. I've had Fords diesels with the old naturally aspirated 7.3 and really loved those. The last one I had got 25mpg all day and 15 loaded. I'd of probably would of gone back to a ford diesel if it got any kind of mileage all the people I've worked with hadn't told me about their 13mpg highway empty. I was getting better than that in my 2000 Superduty with a 5.4 2 valve gasser and it got 18mpg.

I haven't done any real critical mileage testing yet. I'm still having too much fun playing.. I ran empty to and from Shreveport and got about 18-19mpg combined(hand calculated). That was with a pretty heavy foot though. I had the cruise set on about 75 most all the way out there and back on the interstate. That will come up considerably now that my dpf and egr fell off.
As for power and driveability, I couldn't be any happier. When I still had the dpf and egr on, and ran a mid level tune on it, I noticed it didn't go into regen near as much as without the smarty. For what it's worth, I don't abuse my truck, but I also don't baby it.
When you get ready to start playing with yours, I'll be happy to lend a hand and get you pointed in the right direction.

Welcome to the world of Regen mode. Not letting your truck idle will help keep it from loading the dpf as quickly. Regens will play hell with your mileage.
