Angry Mr. Amir Chela Vik-kiv; aka amirchela

Hey gang!

I am Amir, owner of a (gasp!) 1983 El Camino with a worn-out gasoline
engine - those details are unimportant. I currently work as a USPS fleet Mechanic-Tech on our trucks - about 40-50% diesel. You-all must sense where this is going..........

I'm interested in a PRACTICAL diesel engine swap for my truck. The likely suspects include:
1) GM DURAMAX [which one is BEST and WHY?]
2) CUMMINS, 5.9 L 6BT 12 or 24 valve; or 3.9 L 4BT
3) Import option to fit, reasonable expense, make MAX power.

The CUMMINS 6BT is tempting, but HEAVY [1100 lbs vs 550 of 305 gas engine]

Tuurbocharger[s] are definitely in future plans for the swapped diesel engine.

The chassis in vehicle is same as 80's GM cars: Monte Carlo; Malibu, etc. It is called G series [not "A" - the prior designation for pre-'78 El Camino chassis].

I do plan to either use GM 700 R4 overdrive [beefed-up], or a later generation full electronic evolution of this trans. I also would consider a strong 5 or 6 speed manual transmission [actually would prefer this].

Current rear axle is GM 10 bolt, due to be upgraded to Ford 9 inch, or possibly Dana 60-70 Series.

Surely, someone knows of this being done before / details? / how to contact owner?

I am convinced of practicality of DIESEL POWER, and will not rest until I've managed this swap.

Any info appreciated. Contact < amirchela@gmail.com >.

Thank-you, mucho gracias, merci beaucoup amir

I would think that a Cummins might be too tall to fit in the Camino. You might be better off looking for a Dmax engine with Allison.
