First choice would be a 94-98 12 valve (981/2 came out with a 24 valve you don't want this)
Second choice would be 91-93 12 valve

Welcome to the bombers as for cummins motors a 94 to 98 12v would be the best but any cummins is a good motor good luck with your swap and I am glad to hear you are going the diesel way.

I think you would be best off with a 97 or 98 12v cummins (remember 98 was the split year early had the 12v and later had the 24) just mainly because of they were the years graced with the p7100 bosch pump and if later you decide you want more power they are the monsters! Dont get me wrong here the other years can be just as mean but take more work and money. Any year cummins would be a good swap though I would also recommend that it be intercooled! Also they did us chevy owners a favor and made back engine plates to accept the chevy bellhousing most were on the 3.9 4cyl engines but they bolt right on the 5.9 also!

Jackass 4x4:

Just so ya know cummins engines in dodge pickups started using the p7100 p-pump injection pumps in 1994 not just 97-98 trucks

Welcome to DB.I would go with a 12v like the others are saying.I love mine because of the fuel milage i'm getting.Much better than my last truck.Mine also pulls my fifth wheel like it's not even there.I wouldn't trade it for anything.
