Default Back in Black.....

Long time lurker here, finally just registered. Been in Fords the last 10 years. Mostly duallys all 6.0L garbage. I'm so sick of the Ford trash engine I am not going Ford again although I wish they made a better engine, I despise Chevrolet because they took the bailout and now their stock trades higher than Fords...... Sorry, ranting.

Ok, about to purchase another dually. 2005 Chev 3500 6.6 220000 miles all options, heavily pulled truck, new injectors and known history. Or 2004 Dodge 5.9 Dually 197000 miles basic, not pulled at all, has a new rebuilt trans because it dropped reverse for an unknown reason, also with a traceable history. Both trucks are in equivilent physical condition and are both around $15000.00, no mods on the Dodge ever, the Chev has a program installed. Both are 4WD.

I'm leaning more towards the Dodge, and I've never had anything but the crap 6.0L Ford.

Some qualified opinions would be nice........

Welcome! I can't give you too much useful info because of my limited experience with modern diesels (6.5 guy here ). I do know my uncle has an 05 or 06 Duramax that's nearing 400K miles with no problems at all, only had to deal with the IFS. He loves the engine and the Allison. The Duramax is a solid, powerful engine. I would just be sure to do some research on them and give it a thorough look over/inspection before buying anything, especially since you say it's been worked hard. No comment on the Dodge, I've never been under the hood of one and my families all GM.

Good luck!

DODGE bro. You'll never look back! Ive had a 2002 duramax dually. 1 ruined engine due to turbo failure. The new installed engine kicked a rod out the side of the block. only had truck 2 years. Techs indicated that both engines were over stressed due to towing beyond its capacity. At the time I didnt have anything to tow, and totally stock, no mods. Next was 2004 ford 6.0 PSD dually (POS rather). Had that truck 2 years. It spent most of its time at the Dealer. Bought a 28' travel trailer (just over 8,600 lbs loaded) after getting the rv. Every time I towed my trailer, my truck ended up on the back of a tow truck with blown headgaskets. This happened 5 times. Lemon Law got me out of that. Then went with 06 Dodge dually. I wasnt a real fan of Dodge, but its been the best truck Ive ever had. Havent looked back since. The only thing that has failed was the water pump. Very easy fix and not expenisve to fix. The cummins has alot of grunt down in the lower rpms. And better fuel mileage to boot, towing and empty.

Look at it this way, a Cummins has less moving parts..... I like the idea of popping open the hood and being able to see both fenderwells and lots of space in between. Do that with a Duramax and PSD and you dont see the fenderwells, or the surpentine drive belt for that matter! The v8 diesels make their power a bit higher in the rpms, as opposed to Cummins which is lower. Albeit, the v8 diesels do sound pretty cool. To me the I-6 design of the Cummins sounds like farm tractor, but ya get used to it. Im in it for the reliability, and my CTD has more than exceeded my expectations. I have since gotten a newer travel trailer, that fully loaded, is right about 9800 lbs, plus I carry a 6500 watt generator (289 lbs wet) 20 gal extra water, 10 gal gasoline, 1 extra 8 gal tank of propane, and two 10 foot kayaks, in the bed. My CDT pulls this with no difficulty whatsoever. If you notice in my sig, my mods are very conservative.
