Default Hey peoples.

I bought my 82 VW Rabbit Turbo Diesel engine for a class project in my Diesel Theory Class. I do not have the vehicle, just the engine and the manual transaxel. The junkyard didn't have the vehicle ether, which is just fine with me. I don't know much beyond that the compression ratio is different between gasoline and diesel engines and don't put your hand near the nozzle on the injectors. Beyond that, I'll be asking stupid questions quiet a bit on here as I pull apart and put together the engine and retro fitting it to a different vehicle.

There are no stupid questions- we all started somewhere.

Hmm, I assume it is the1.6L 4 banger. I have an original manual for that engine. If you need any specs just ask.
Be careful the OE rabbit engine had no Turbocharger-does the IP have the turret with the boost pressure adjuster?
You can squeeze about 120hp out of this engine safely. If you go higher you should prepare yourself to change the headgasket every three months...

By the way-welcome on this site!

It is a 1.6L 4-banger, but there is a difference with this engine. I did some research in the way of looking up the transmission and engine numbers that were on the side and found out that my engine did come with a turbo originally and was made to be able to handle it. Only 200 of this specific engine was made in Germany, the only place that the engine was manufactured, and of that only very few made it to America. I only found the engine and transaxle on the side of the hill under some stuff. The owner of the junkyard had already gotten rid of the rest of the car already. I haven't found out yet if the headgasket is a two or three prong yet though. But the car HAD a computer in it in that year you say?

Hahaha, not true- lets say only about two million engines were made.
This engine was planted into every pasenger car. Rabbit, Golf, Jetta, Passat you name it.
This engine came in 1.5 early stage and 1.6
Turbo with LDA, Turbo without LDA (eco with oxi catalytic conerter), with Intercooler
54hp without turbo, then in stages 64, 71 80 and 90hp.
the early models had ato be manual adjusted valves the later one hydraulic tappets. Very reliable engine- mine made 500.000km(300.000miles) then I found the car boring and dumped it.

You wanna know if it was a turbo block- just remove the oil pan and look for the oil squirters. No oil Squirters - not made for turbo, as easy as it. The turbo version also has better pistons.
I said nothing about a puter. The only wire that thing does have is the electromagnetic valve to shut it down...

Ah, misunderstood you about the computer thing. You'll have to explain to me what IP stands for and LDA. I'm not very good with remembering the names of things just using the first letter of the word. How do I put pics up on this website so I can show what all I have pulled off this thing? Oh, and what to the oil squirters look like? Anything like a injector or oil pump in the pan?

Oil Squirters look like little fishing hooks, with their direction on the bottom of the piston. "Squirting" on the bottom of the pistons to help cooling them.

IP= Injectionpump
LDA= Boost pressure regulated fuel
