Keep in mind here guys that he was asking about the engine, not the truck in general. The 5.9 Cummins is the time tested king of the diesels. The Duramax runs a close second. I wouldn't even look at a Ford diesel. Although I am disappointed with some aspects of my Dodge, and Ford appears to make a great truck. The Cummins is rated to go an extra 100,000 miles before a rebuild compared to a DMax or PStroke. Facts are facts. Also, keep in mind lots of people put a Cummins into their Ford or Chevy, but noone ever takes out a Cummins and puts in one of the other two. There is good reason for that.

I think it 's a tough question . My first diesel was a 06dmax luv it, it is fast and will pull the doors off a barn .Now i have the fever, but it is not cheap with newer trucks. so i just added a 98 dodge 12v to my small diesel collection and i luv that truck and if i had to give one of them up i don't know wich i would choose. try to find what fits u

Ther all pretty equal really. They can all last 500k without a rebuild if you treat it right. I know your askin about which motor is best, but IMO its the truck around it that makes a difference because they are all great motors.

7.3's require the least amount of maintenance imo, you never have to tear into the engine to adjust the lash since they got hydraulic lifters

If we could just get a truck with the Cummins 12 V, bombed to about 400/1200, pushing an Allison to Dana straight axles, in a Ford body with GM suspension and ride, and with the GM dealership network, it would be close to the perfect truck. Able to pull almost anything on wheels, run over 300K miles, get 20+ mpg, perform as good as it looks - awesome!

Alas, the only way to do that is to build it on your own.

My brother has the Duramax. It has been in the shop multiple times for big ticket items like the transmission, axles, and engine controls. It struggles with a toy hauler set up for his motocross circut.

I have a 95 12V Dodge, the engine is mint and pulls like a mother, but the body is falling apart around it.

My kiddo has a 7.3 PSD, w/lift, tuner, etc., and it did well, except for the ride and transmission slipping.

The kiddo's boss has a CRD 6.7, which looks and drives great, but at half the power of my 12V and his mileage sucks. He's already had to deal with electrical and transmission problems.

They all work and they all have flaws. No perfect trucks in this world...

There is one perfect truck! THE ONE YOU BUY AND TAKE GOOD CARE OF. If you mod the crap out of it do not expect it to last. Ford, Chevy and Dodge all have good engineering and are built for a specific application. If it has been moded. It is not there fault it failed. You mod it you engineered it, you live with the result don't blame them. Im not bashing mods but. They do not engineer there parts to go with the other parts you have installed. Not there fault they are making a product for a specific application not all applications. You can tell by the post and sigs who breaks and who mods they normally go together.
