First of all I am not trying to start a peeing contest. The main reason I purchased a 08 Duramax was because it was designed by Isuzu, Who is the #2 diesel mfgt. in the world. They have been building these diesels for 40 years. Being "100% in house GM design" doesent impress me to much by looking at the Detroit 3 today. This "DESIGN" is the reason they are in the trouble they are in today. IMPO they cant design anything to get around the block. Honda, Toyota, and Nissan Have kicked their butts in design and quality and the Detroit 3 sat on theirs and let it happen. Why was congress so slow to let them have a loan? They too know what kind of crap they design. Read Consumers Reports and you will see what I am talking about. I dont care what another one buys. At 62 I could not wait any longer for Toyota or Nissan to put a diesel in a truck. If they had had one I would have bought it. Every time I get in the 08 I wonder not if but when is something going to happen. I myself would never buy a diesel GM designed. Look at the 6.5. Look at the trouble it gave. I think the only thing GM has going in their favor in the Duramax/Alison and the Cummins in the Dodge. Ford,I wont even go there. JUST MY .02 WORTH. LOVE YA"LL While I agree that the 6.5 was a terrible engine and Isuzu REALLY helped GM make one of the best diesel engines ever, you still won't catch me dead in a Toyota pickup truck. And while the big three are/were in huge trouble, their trucks are the only good strand of life that kept them rolling, and offer something that no asian truck could ever touch. A Toyota, while being a good truck, is far too civilized for my tastes. If it's a truck, it should look, feel, ride, and drive like one. I don't want a car on steriods.
But yeah, it's too bad GM broke off with Isuzu, we'll see how that turns out.

I just spent two weeks in a 3.0L turbodiesel Hilux(Tacoma) with 6-8 people and some cargo(4 door cab with a couple bench seats in an enclosed carrier in the bed) on a legitimate 4wd trail deep in Thailand. the road was so rough that in the rain they have to winch their way through with 9k lb winches or take elephants. if anything breaks, help is 5-10 hours away. the oldest of the 4 trucks was an '85 and it's long list of breaking history were two broken axles and a rebuilt manual trans, all caused by severe overloaded weight for 300k miles on an offroad trail...I've owned an S10 and know it couldn't handle a mere percentage of what the tacomas can do. it's not prohibitively more expensive to get the chevy/ford compact trucks over there but to the guys that ever load their trucks or go out on the trails, our domestics are the biggest joke ever over there.

Until they start using Tundras out on the rigs, you won't catch me in one. I'll stick to a domestic 3/4 diesel any day.
And yeah, I don't like trucks that ride like cars, or have car-like interiors. Call me oldschool but I like simplicity and a bit of roughness.

simple and rough are a mechanical pump, straight front axle and a stick shift, maybe even a leaf sprung front for the truly old school.

If GM had a leaf-sprung front end with a 6 speed I'd take it. None of the new trucks are like that, the last solid front end truck GM made was in '91. My truck is my primary vehicle and I don't have money to toy with an old truck to keep it running. So call me a hypocrite for driving a GM, just cause that's what I've got doesn't mean it's exactly what I wanted.

They are much better at keeping the service department busy.

so let me get this straight...you drive an IFS duramax and you're complaining about 'yotas being too smooth? there's nothing simple or rough about a dmax 'truck', it's the quietest, smoothest, most plush ride of any of the full size diesels with an interior similar to the tahoes and other GM cars.
And you can forget about the JAPS puting a diesel in their half-ton

whooo hoooo this thread got off track quickly, anyway i have a 3/4 ton truck but i never tow or have a real use for the 3/4 ton capabilities but i like a real truck but these new half tons are gonna be awesome, I'm sorry but none of the big 3 can afford another flop so i have faith they'll get this one right it's a V8 diesel that uses way fewer parts than traditional V8's, Oh and greasemonkey the 6.5 wasn't designed by chevy it is a detroit diesel, correct me if i'm wrong
