LMM Duramax....Questions.
Hey guys,
I am 22 and I just found a great deal on a 2008 LMM from a Chevy Dealer around here. It was a demo truck they tell me, and it only has 857 miles on it as of now. Anyway, I had kept my eye out for a low mileage pre 2006-2007 because of all the EPA stuff on the trucks. But this seems to good to pass up.
I plan on these things if I get the truck:
- DPF Delete
- Programmer (not sure which one - please help ===> everyday driving, very very little towing heavy things, may tow a few ATV's, may sound stupid but I want some smoke)
- MBRP 4" or 5" Exhaust (please help decide)
- Some kind of intake (please help decide - want the best one)
- Tranny Kit (not too familiar with this but I am told that WOT runs on this truck will cause premature tranny fail, someone point me in the right direction with this)
Thats all I can think of for now.
I really want a truck that will not suffer from all the emission stuff on it. That is why I want to let the truck breathe by removing the DPF but I am not sure if I should do more than that. My idea is to make it similar and run similar to a Duramax without a DPF - if that is possible.
Also, I want to remove the DPF but I hear that it will throw some codes and I read that a specific programmer will get rid of the codes but which one is it? How hard is it to install/take off the DPF for emissions and stuff?
Please help me guys.
Thanks,
-Mike

get this with your exhaust
- Programmer (not sure which one - please help ===> everyday driving, very very little towing heavy things, may tow a few ATV's, may sound stupid but I want some smoke)
you can argue this for years, but someone did a writeup in here just a couple weeks ago comparing the options. other option is EFI Live, search about it
- MBRP 4" or 5" Exhaust (please help decide)
no offense to anyone, but MBRP is like Banks, paying a premium for the name. There's a few vendors on here with some fat deals on some exhaust systems right now.
- Some kind of intake (please help decide - want the best one)
I'm not sure about this one, someone else should chime in
- Tranny Kit (not too familiar with this but I am told that WOT runs on this truck will cause premature tranny fail, someone point me in the right direction with this)
talk to your vendor about trans failing. The ally is a strong trans, and if you don't totally thrash on it, you'll be fine. You can get some improvement with a shift kit and an aftermarket converter if you choose.
Thats all I can think of for now.

you can block the EGR, etc, but the DPF is your main problem. Delete it and put a programmer in it and your about the same as an LBZ (ABOUT. Don't flame me)

Get an exhaust with DPF delete, any vendor on here should be able to help you choose one. Once again, look in this section for a writeup on programmers. Almost all have the DPF delete option.
Please help me guys.

Welcome to DieselBombers!
Just like what has been said already.. there are several options for the Duramax's. PPE is a great all around tuner, and I believe will block the codes from deleting your DPF..
Just about ANY vendor we have can help you out with prices for these things.
Many times you can get a 4" exhaust (DPF Delete) with a programmer as a package deal.
If you dont plan on making 550+ RWHP, then you dont need to buy an aftermarket intake.. its completely unnecessary.. You can simply modify your stock intake box and use the stock filter.
If you are DEAD set on an intake I recommend the S&B intakes.. they are GREAT pieces.
As for your Alli, If you dont flog it, and you change the fluid and filters regularly, mine has held up 435 rwhp for a couple of years now with only a Transgo Jr Shift kit. they are quite cheap. But regular maintence, defuled shifts, and not driving like your 16 will go along way.

Yeah, make sure you know what you're getting into first. If you're okay with that, go for it.
Not sure how much abuse a demo truck is subjected to in 857miles, but it might be worth holding out a bit until you know the truck is sound mechanically before you modify it a lot.
There's a few threads on here about tuners for the Duramaxes. EFI Live, PPE are really good ones.

I guess I should have rephrased that better.
By demo truck I mean a truck in which the dealer was allowed to drive. I dont know how they were able to do this but here it goes.
I know the owner, pretty well in fact - it was his truck for just over 800miles. Hes ~65 years old and I know for a fact it was just a truck to go to and from the dealers he owned, I have ridden in it many times with him. I have no suspicion that this truck was beaten on for those 857 miles. The other 57 miles was from moving around the lot, running down the highway to the other dealers he owned and just general use. No salesmen drove it - just him.
As for the warranty, my brother has been working at a Chevy dealer for more years than I can count and he knows his way in and out of the LMM (so he says). He said he will do any work for me. Thats when it pays off to have a pain in the *** while growing up.
So the PPE sounds good, thats what he reccomended too but honestly, which one should I get. Theres +2 and +1 and HOT - I have no clue what those abreviations mean at all. Someone please explain.
I just really want to have about 400-450rwhp, how much rwtq should I expect if I have that much rwhp?
I will most likely get a shift kit - just for the sake of mind.
This will be driven almost everyday, fairly hard but nothing like a 16 year old. Im talking full throttle for a little bit and hard accelerations.
I want to be able to cruise at 80mph and not be close to 2700rpm like I am in my brothers LLY (I think). This may sound like a stupid questions but what is the RPM's while in top gear at 80mph on the 2500HD? What is the gear ratio stock and if there is an aftermarket one? Which one will suit me best?
Sorry for all the questions guys, I really am new to the diesel trucks in terms of owning them.

In the new 6 speed allisons, @ 80 MPH I think you're going to be running 2255rpm, 1895rpm @ 70mph on stock tires. But I'm not 100% sure, I just did a quick caclulation. GM uses 3.73 axle ratios in all their duramaxes regardless of year or model, but the new ones (06+) have the double overdrive tranny.
In my 5spd allison, @80mph I'm at 2500rpm, @ 70 I'm at 2100. With the 6spd it shouldn't be as much of a concern.
@ 450RWHP, make sure you get a good transmission upgrade.
I'm not sure what power levels the PPE has.
Pacific Performance Engineering - Diesel Specialists
Maybe someone else can give you some better info.
Dude, sounds like you're getting the deal of the century- your own personal mechanic, a broken in engine by a family friend, can't go wrong there. Post pics of that badboy once you get it.
