Question Safe to Buy?

Hi All,

I hope you can help. I am buying small (probably under 9,000 lbs. fully loaded) 5th wheel RV and need to get a truck to pull it. I have been looking for a '06 or '06 2500 with the LBZ. I would prefer 2wd, but they are so scarce that I will probably end up with 4wd. I have never owned a diesel, and my knowledge is limited.

Even though it is far more truck than I need, I just went to see a '06, 3500 dually, crew cab, LT1. It has 80,940 miles and they are asking $24,990. It runs nicely, and is absolutely immaculate.

The truck has a Bully Dog module which I think may be the Triple Dog GT Diesel Gauge/Tuner. I am concerned that if not properly used, it may have done some damage. Is that possible? Is it likely? I am also concerned that the truck may have other, less visible mods that might be detrimental.

The bottom line is that at 70 years old, I am not into tinkering. I just want a truck that will reliably move my wife, my 5er, and me around the country. Should I be considering this truck or should I keep looking? If I do consider it, what should I be looking at on it?

Thanks,
Joel

yep, move on if it has a tuner, you need to find one that is stock, a stock LBZ will last a really long time, they are plenty powerful and really reliable if nothing has been done to it other than regular services

The tuner at the top level has enough to wear the transmission out pretty quick, I don't know anyone with a tuner that has never run it full out even once just to see what it would do or if something would truly break..

chances are the truck will last a good long time, but the transmission will wear out a bit sooner than normal.

look for stock.

Thanks guys. You have pretty much confirmed what I suspected. If only that price weren't so attractive. Oh well, I'll just have to keep looking.

well if you buy it, and the transmission does go, you can get it rebuilt for about $4500-5000, and then it would last forever

honestly.. if you could get them to come down a few thousand due to it having the tuner, it would be worth it even if it decided to give out a few years down the road. good test would be to warm it up and then ROMP on it.. and if the 3-4 4-5 shift is good chances are it's got a good life left. if the transmission limps (sticks to third with error light) it's on it's way out.
