Default 05 duramax gmc, good rig?

My first diesel, I took it overnight and I LOVE the truck, dont love the mileage... it only gets 12mpg towing my 6'x12' cargo trailer empty, thats pretty sad, unloaded (towing nothing) 65mph driving is about 16-17mpg, anyway to improve that if I bought the rig? Its a sweet truck with an edge chip already, doesnt matter on the setting it still gets no better than that, is there anything else that can be done. Appreciate it!

If you just got it last night, how do you know all these mileage figures already?? Don't go by the DIC right off hand, some are accurate, some are not. Usually when a programmer is involved they can be off. So the good 'ol fashioned hand calculation is the way to go, until you see if the DIC is off or not.

Plus, things like bigger tires or aftermarket wheels will be heavier causing milage to drop some. You can free up the exhaust and intake, and increase the milage a bit. Ask away on things you want to do and we can go from there.

I took the truck for 24hrs, sat to sunday. So I drove around alot, but yes, went off the dash numbers for the fuel figuring.

Im more worried about the rigs longevity, any easy way to make sure its a good truck that will last me a long time? I hate buying used rigs, but it is what it is.

my dad's passat tdi said he gets 42 mpg crusing and dropped down to 20 mpg at hard accerlation. there not very accurate. for longevity do the scheduled maintenance and use synthetic oil. if you got a chip you need gauges. egt, boost, and tranny temp. a 4 inch exhaust will help mileage too. fill out your signature with the model and all the info on it. look at others sigs for an exaample

i lost mileage with my 4" dual exhaust because i always want to hear the pipes rumble but ya i got 170k on mine and the only problem was the injector harness and the crappy frontend but you gotta pay to play

EFI live is definitely the way to go for tuning. Wish I would've done it in the first place. You could also look into re gearing your differentials. You'd lose performance but gain economy. It's worth it to some folks.

If you haven't done it already, you should re-route your PCV and block your EGR. It'll extend the life of your heads, and turbo. You could also try adding propane or water/meth. They'll up your power, and efficiency. The water/meth will also basically steam clean your internals.
