Default injector questions

I'm posting this for a guy i work with. he just lost an injector, not sure on what cylinder. and most of them are getting weak. he said he is going to be replacing all 8 this winter. I'm a ford guy and i know how to do injectors on the 7.3. if any of you guys have done injectors on the powerstroke and duramax and can say how easy/ difficult they are compared to eachother that would be great. i'm always willing to learn so don't shoot me down for being a ford guy. i read the sticky on replacing injectors. but it's all new to me. thanks in advance

I do both all the time.

The LB7 is time consuming more than anything because of the mass amounts of EVERYTHING that has to be removed above the valve covers and the fact that D-MAX Industries decided that those stupid M6 5mm hex bolts were better in quantities over 30 per engine to hold down the two-piece valve covers.

At least you don't have to remove the glowplugs to get the oil and fuel out of the cylinder on a Duramax before you start it (although if you use brake cleaner to aid in cleaning the injector cups, you may want to leave the glow plug controller unplugged for the first start.....).

ok so before you pull the injector you don't need to drain fuel or anything? just pull the injector out? and i talked to him again today. he said he's only going to replace the drivers side 4. is there any reason he shouldn't? and he's going to get bosch, i believe they're remans.

You don't need to drain anything.

Buy from GM. They are remans, but after the countless ones I've replaced I've never had an issue (all from Bosch). You can get them from places like NAPA (and I've recently installed a couple sets) but the injectors come from all over (read: they are NOT the same quality remanufacturing)....and I had one fail after 5 minutes of running a few days ago. Gotta love doing stuff twice.

Speaking of doing stuff twice, just have him buy all 8 and get it over with. If one's shitty, then the others are also on their way.

ok so in the process of pulling the valve covers, a few of the allen heads stripped out. is it possible to put a normal hex bolt in?

i hope that isn't $12.00 for one bolt. i suggested fastenal to him yesterday but he's almost convinced that the small rounded taper and the small hole in the end of the factory bolt means something. i told him it shouldn't.
