First things to check for is oil level. Are you getting diesel in the oil? You can perform a simple self check by placing a drop on a paper towel. The oil will sit in the center and you will get a clear ring around the oil if there is diesel present. Next thing is to pull the fuel filter off and replace it with a GM fuel filter if you dont have fuel in the oil. Notice if the fuel level in the filter is full. If it is full that is good. If it is half full your fuel filter housing could be cracked. If you have fuel in the oil you more than likely have bad injectors. If no fuel is present in the oil check your fuel lines that come up and over the driver side valve cover next to the firewall. You could possibly have a crimped pressure line. These are just a few self checks you can do before you spend the money with someone to look at it. Let me know what you come up with. I just went through several things on my truck trying to get it figured out. I figured mine out by trial and error. Little bit expensive but it was a good learning experience.

does it have any codes or does it smoke when it does start? i would probably start by changing the fuel filter and checking to see if your fuel pump is workin also check for air leaks in the fuel filter housing. usually when the injectors go bad the truck will be hard to start and smoke. those are very comnon for inj. problems

you should fill out a signature so we can see what your truck has done to it. is your truck chipped? i had a problem with my edge chip causing my truck to misfire and to die just drivin down the road occasionally, mabye yours has a similar problem. if its not throwing a code them its not computer controlled so it might have a hairline crack in the fuel filter housing and when it gets warm it opens up enough to suck air. when it does start how does it run? deos it feel like it has loss in power or is it normal?

My truck had a power loss whenever the pump was going out on it. You could put a programmer on it and it wouldn't even smoke on the high setting. Hopefully you get it lined out.
