i have a 01 3500 that does the same thing it has be doing it for two years.i started with a fpr. that didnt fix it. i change both fuel hoses filter to pump.i changed the fuel caps that didnt work. i took it back to where i got it.the dealer spent 4 hours on it said it was the fuel pump not pressuring up . ihavent changed it yet i hope that is what it is if not thats 700.00 gone .it started when it had about 140000 it has 205000 now a it is still running. but i have to clear the codes all the time. maybe this will help you. i pull a 44 ft. car trailer with mine that is were it started an know it does it all the time if you soft pedal it its not so bad on setting the code.

I should have mentioned i changed the fuel lines.... Just picked up a new, (at least unused) FPRV at a very good price. I'm trying that next. then going to swap the CP3. Local GM Dealer ship is pretty much useless... Kind of winging it now. I do use the "soft pedal" all the time. I will throw a code "in town" traffic if i dont.

Back in May while towing my 24' fifth wheel, my check engine light came on and the truck went into limp mode. I pulled over shut down the engine and opened up my toolbox to find that i did have my code reader with me. It was P0093, Fuel System Leak Detected, Large Leak. I reset the computer after looking for a leak and found nothing. Had no problems again for several months. Now, just about every day the light is on and off, sometimes hitting the limp mode. same code, only code. I have read just about every thread on here and several other forums about this and results seem to vary. I have talked to the local GM service center manager and we both agree it needs to have diagnostics run on it.
Had that done 2 weeks ago, It showed a bad Fuel rail pressure sensor, I replaced that today, $207.00 Easy swap out. However I took it for a hard run, and it threw the p0093 code again and hit limp mode. Now i'm stumped again (not to mention pi$$ed off after spending the $207.00).
I'm looking for a little imput on this. According to the Service manager, he does not feel the injectors or pump are bad. My mileage is still fairly good, 16-20, It is not smoking , the oil level is staying the same. Pump is making the proper pressures.
Truck has 118k miles, it is all stock. Fuel filter was replaced about 1000 miles ago, air filter too.
Not sure where to go from here. I am going to go get a beer.... I need it.

My 03 had the same problem. After replacing the fpr and having the same problem I found a wire inside a harness that had a nick in the insulation. Apparently this is a common problem.
The wire harness runs accross the top of the engine right next to the FICM unit. Cut the harness open and take a good look at the wires (by the FICM). I used a mirror to look at the underside of the wires and thats how I found my problem. The nick in the wire was small but must have been just enough to cause a problem.
Ever since I found this wire and taped it up and put a piece of rubber hose under the harness, my problem has gone away.
I realize this is an older post but I hope my information helps someone else out.
Good Luck!
