Default Rough running 02 Help!!!!!

Well some of you may know that i used to be a die hard cummins guy. Ummmm well the world of divorce got in the way and had to let my baby go to a better home. On to the problem at hand, an 02 2500 dmax that made its way into my garage for the sum of a song. Couldnt believe i got it for what i did pay, and still cant. My problem is that the truck had some recent work done to it, why im not sure. It had the 6spd manual trans replaced along with the transfer case. Im assuming there was an issue with the installation of the trans because the adapter plate on the rear of the engine is cracked and leaking coolant as fast as i can dump it in the over flow container. That part is now fixed with a used plate assembly i found in a salvage yard. The next issue is that the truck starts fairly easy down to about 30* so far(hasnt been any colder in nebraska yet) and idles as smooth as a sewing machine. But............as soon as the throttle pedal is touched the engine misses like crazy and shakes. There is no abnormal smoke from the tail pipe and revs from idle fairly quickly but with the shake in it. Any ideas on what to look for? My father is thinking is may be an injector but im leaning toward an over heated engine and burned rings or piston as the truck was parked within 500 miles of having the new trans and transfer case installed in it. Any help here would be a good start. It also has 278K miles on it also and unsure if it ever had injectors replaced. Thanks for reading everyone!

Do you have access to something that can read balence rates of the injectors? when was the last fuel filter change on it is there any air leaks in the fuel supply?

if you suspect something is wrong internaly you can pick up a diesel copression test kit from harbor freight, its only lke 24 bucks. stock compression can be anywhere from 400-450 but its a balence your looking for.

but ur going to need a scan tool do diagnose the injectors with out actually tearing into the motor

I talked to my local dealer and they said if i brought it in they would hook it up to the scan tool and check the balance rates for me( having previously worked for them helped i think). I am thinking that the motor got hot and thats why the truck was parked and not used any more. As soon as i can get tractors out of the shop for the winter i plan on digging into the truck again and will be looking for an 8' box to install on it also. If it turns out that it will be an expensive fix we will probably just part the truck out. It would be a shame to do that cause there isnt a scratch or dent on the thing! Typical broken windshield and worn out wiper blades and smashed padding in the seats but other than that the truck is in good shape. Next thing is if it is something as simple and easy as an injector and the compression is nominal, what could I get away with as far as mods to this truck?
Been thinking an AFE cold air intake kit, some kind of programmer and possibly adding LP into the mix with the programmer and installing dual 6" stacks.

when you take it to the dealer ask them to do a rail pressure test on the cp3 pump too.

injectors aint too bad, just alot of time and paitence. injector pump theres just alot things to remove. i have a few write ups on alot of the expensive jobs and currently doing a write up on how to put the heads back on.

as far as performance upgrades, if cp3 cant make the rail pressure in the diagnosis test then a lift pump really dont do much you can get a cp3 for almost the same price as a lift pump, except the truck will run like new with a new cp3.

Intake, a modded stock one can flow more cooler air than alot of afterket intakes. but an upgrade would be a S&B and banks.

Well folks, been awhile since I posted to this. Finally got back to working on my truck. I am happy to post that the shake/vibration problem I was having is now fixed. Something simple that I overlooked and didn't think about while pondering why the transmission had to be replaced. The culpret turned out to be a broken dual mass flywheel. I went back together with a solid flywheel/spring center clutch disc upgrade. With my limited access to proper shop facilities I decided it was best to stay away from the 'factory' stuff. Now I'm just finishing a few small details on the truck and trying to locate a decent inexpensive truck box for it. Thanks to everyone that posted help topics.
