unusual rattle in engine

Rattle could be loose battery. Loose intake. Exhaust hanger. Brake line. Motor mount and more like stated above.
Tick is likely normal. Check fuel filter. Fuel quality. Like above temps have a lot to do with it. Cold requires more fuel during start and idle, until warm. Let it warm up about 15 minutes.

I just went through the injector hassle myself, and because of my truck being put into service in December 2001 the warranty would not cover anything. I went through pensacola diesel and got Remanufactured injectors, all 8 with new o-rings, return line seals (brass washers) etc. For roughly $1200.00 . For Chevrolet (GM) to do all the work, they ask around $4500.00 parts, labor included. I just decided to do it myself, not hard to do, just a pain to get to, I found out mine were bad by finding excessive fuel in my crankcase. You might get lucky only to tear it down and find just a leaking return line dumping fuel into your valve assembly, but for $1200.00 you might as well replace the injectors while having everything apart.

Have you ever seen oil/fuel dump out from around your front seal, if so your crankcase built to much pressure and had no where else to lead fluid to and went the easiest route possible, this is what happened to me, i noticed no loss in power, but noticed it in fuel economy, if so, you might want to get the injectors orr fuel line replaced asap before you "wash" your main bearings because to rebuild an LB7 its about $8500....Also you may notice a cylinder misfire.
