Question Dealer says bad gp module but no code

Hey there,

I'm a noob to the site and I have recently taken my Dmax to the dealer to have them check the injectors because I'm pushing 200,000 and I had my suspicions any way. When I got it back they told me that my injectors were definitely bad and my injection pump wasn't putting out enough pressure and I needed a new glow plug control module. I expected the injectors to be bad but not anything else. What really bothers me about this is the gp module. I have two codes (as read by the Bully Dog tuner): Intake air heater code and some kind of module long term memory code. Looked up that code and I found out that was common having the Bully Dog. Truck was running fine so I ignored both of those codes. There is no code for anything about the glow plugs or module...so why would I need to replace them when the truck starts like a champ cold or not. Is this guy feeding me a line of s*** or what?

well i know the california emission trucks seem to have issues with the glow plug modules. usually it set CEL even when everything is fine.

if i remember right, the air intake heater is controlled buy the glow plug module and maybe the dealer was just seeing the code and assuming the module was bad.

as for the injectors and CP3, if it was me i wound change the injectors and not the pump. bad injectors can make it look like the CP3 is bad. what happens is that the (one or more) injectors start to leak too much fuel past their internal check valve into the return line and this will lower the rail pressure making the CP3 pump look weak. find out from them how they determined the pump was bad. did they do a return line bottle test? or did they just hook a scanner up to it and watch the pressure and balance rates? try not to ask them this but see if they will tell you.

if the injectors are returning too much fuel one cannot truly test the pump. but to say both are bad is the easy way out; good for dealer/bad for customer

if you want to save a few grand there is an excellent sticky on replacing the injectors yourself if you feel up to it

Thanks for the response. I didn't know that about the intake heater. That may be what they were looking at. I figured as much for the injection pump. I have already ordered an edge insight so I can check balance rates myself and have ordered the fuel injector and upper cylinder cleaner. I will check balance rates before and after the cleaning and use that as a guide for needing new injectors. I have already read the diy on replacing the injectors and being a backyard mechanic since I was 16 I will be doing the injectors and cp3 myself should it come to that. As far as I know they only checked it with the computer because they did not have it for long. Also, from what I can tell I have the federal emissions truck.

Most dealers stock all those parts, and cheaper. I'd take their part numbers and go to the dealer

you could do that but my local dealers prices were 3x high even with shipping i saved a good bit so it depends on your dealer i guess mines the only one in 500 miles so they tend to spike prices
