dont know if algae can grow in diesel, sounds like you had some water in your fuel. my .02

Algae can be a concern. You want to look for a biocide. Power Service makes one called Bio Kleen. I've been looking for some myself, not every parts store sells biocides. I would try a truck stop or something similar near you. You may want to keep an extra fuel filter with you regardless. Not sure if that will "clean up" your fuel system right into your new filter.
