Default LB7 Cleaning Injectors

Seems I got some bad fuel, it will crank but won"t start. I'm cleaning the injectors, got the injectors out but the pin in the tip won"t come out, is it suppose to come out? Should I just buy new tips? On a tight budget.

i wouldn't open up any of the injectors. they are very precision parts and the smallest contaminant will stop the injectors from operating correctly. in my opinion you are likely to make things worse not better

if you are still intent on cleaning them, then yes, the pin will come out. try a small strong magnet to pull it out. the jets are about as small or smaller then the width of a fine hair (0.16mm). if pull the pin out, shine a bright flash light into the whole where the pin goes and look for small points of light at the jets, should be 7 of them.

remember if you do any of this do it in a "clean room" environment so you dont make thinks worse.

most of the time the issue with the LB7 injectors is the ball seat. it erodes some and leaks fuel by and that causes low rail pressure and hard start conditions. change your fuel filter first and check your fuel pressure while cranking. should reach 10 MPa or 1450 PSI for the ECM to open the injectors.

good luck

Thanks for your help. I did take the nozzle out but not the pin and let them soak in cleaning fluid over night. The first thing I did was change my fuel filter, three times. A friend brought his scanner by and no codes showing. Today I'm putting everything back together, draining the fuel tank, put new fuel in, pumping the primer while disconnected to get bad fuel out of the lines, putting on a new filter, pray'n this thing will start.

Hallelujah! the truck started. I only cleaned the passenger side so, now I'm going to clean the drivers side. Got a question. There are two hoses on the drivers side toward the back running across the valve cover that look like they have quick disconnects. I took the clips off on the connections but I am not sure if I just pull then off or need a special tool.

these are the fuel supply and return lines to the engine. a special tool is usually needed. i have used some small screwdrivers before to finesse them off.

i would suggest trying this before tearing into the other side: How To: DIY - Injector cleaning - Chevy and GMC Duramax Diesel Forum

what are your balance rates?

Ok, thanks thats a good Idea. Not sure what the balance rates were, my friend brought his scanner over and checked everything while I turned the engine over and said there were no codes and everything looked fine. I wish he could come back since I can get it started now. I think he said if it was running he could check each injector. Anyway, I'll try that cleaning process first. Thanks again!

get the rates before and after. see if it makes a differences.

your friend is right, cant check balance rates without engine running.

That cleaning trick did the job, running smooth now. I would like to see what the injector rates are. Now I can drive to his place. Got a question, Do you think I should install a second fuel filter? If so, what do you recommend, I have seen this "Airdog system" pretty expensive but not as much as replacing injectors. I thought just an extra fuel filter would do the job but two filters might over work the CP3 pump so, I would need a lift pump too?
