Default coolant sensor??

few weeks ago i started my truck and after driving a few miles my low coolant light came on. was almost to work so i rode it out and watched the temp gauge closely.. after it cooled i went out and checked the resevoir and it was full. took it home and no light. its been coming on, on and off the last few weeks and the temp gauge holds solid and the water level never changes. so im wondering if there is a sensor or something that has gone bad or what my problem may be. im sick of seeing that light pop up every other morning.

the sensor is on the bottom of the overflow tank. You can find it if you trace the wires. Check the level before starting the truck in the morning when you would normaly get the low coolant message and see if it is low then

sounds to me like you have a break in a wire somewhere or a bad sensor. you could try jumping the terminals on the connector at the sensor and see if the "low coolant" message does not come on. you would have to do this before starting the truck as the message only gets reset once you turn it off. if you try and jump it after the message you'll need to turn off and restart the engine. you can also push the button on the cluster to reset it too.

if jumping the sensor works then it is likely a bad sensor. if not then suspect a bad wire somewhere.

it is also possible that you cap needs replacing or cleaning
