Default Trying not to get ripped off...

Hi guys, if this is posted in the wrong forum I apologize.

I bought my first diesel 2 months ago, a 98 Chevy 3500 6.5 Turbo. This past weekend it got mad at me and decided to roll down in a 15' ditch with me and a buddy in it! Basically the whole body is either dented or bent; mechanically everything is still great, no bends on the frame. Realistically I could bang out the dents to the box & replace the cab & continue driving it, but I just don't have time for it. I'm planning/trying to part it out now, but it seems to me like the offers I'm getting are all way lower than I'd expect. i.e. $200 for the motor/tranny/wiring harnes or everything including my 8' steel dump box for $400. Even my new tires I can't get an offer over $100. Damn thing only has 189000KM/118000 miles on it. Am I crazy to think the parts are worth more?

Not much of a first post.....sorry!

Well, you have yourself a parts truck there my friend.

Suggestions?

(you quoted KMs and I see Ontario plates, so I'll give you a Canadian outlook on parts prices)

Keep in mind the owners of most 6.5's are....."ahem".......cheap.

How do I know? Well,I own a 6.5 and i'm che.......

People who own these trucks do because they can be had on the lower level of the market price range and they don't have a lot of cash to spend. That's a lot of why your offers are so low...

Take the dump bed out and sell it separately. You're going to always get low ball offers trying to sell that as a package.

The engine isn't going to fetch much more than a grand at most. Figure 500 is a more likely figure.

Transmission, couple hundred. The ones trying to get it as a package deal with the engine are trying to get something for nothing. A 4l80E is a stout transmission and a popular swao in performance cars using the 4L60E. Try some of the gm camaro/firebird boards.

Tires? pull em off the truck and list them for half of what you paid. If they're quality name tires they'll go fairly quick. If they're no names.....well......

A 3500 should have the 14 bolt full floater axle. Hit up some 4x4 boards, they are fairly sought after pieces that can fetch 500-1000.

Pull out the PMD if it runs and drop it on eBay for 30-40 bucks if it's been reloacated off the IP already.

The PCM should fetch 75-100.

A decent interior is dependent on who wants it. Your crew cab makes the market even smaller for it.

If you sell the truck as a package at once, you won't get these prices. Someone who wants only the engine and has to take the whole truck only sees it as a hassle to get rid of and will offer less.

Make sure you sell the engine first so a perspective buyer can hear it run which will fetch more money than one that can't be heard running.

The rest of the truck is, unfortunately and for the most part, scrap iron....

One last thing; this is going to take a while to get rid of all of it.

Parting a truck takes a long time to find the right buyers for the bits.

If you don't have a place to keep it while the vultures pick the carcass you'll have to sell it whole. Which will force you into accepting a lower price due to the buyer having to get rid of what he doesn't want...

Is that an ex-military truck?

Good luck.

Wow! That's a ton of info, thank you very much.

Damn, I was hoping to get a little more for the motor. The prices I saw when I was searching were much higher. I only posted it a week ago, have had hundreds of replies, and $500 is better than any offer I've seen. I'd throw in a case of that fancy beer if it got me up near a grand!

Got an offer for $150 for the tranny today, so I think I'll take that. Great tip though on the camaro boards, I never would've even thought of that. I'll look into doing that tomorrow if I don't hear back from the guy....wouldn't be the first; sold the dump box twice this past weeked for $700 & it's still on my truck

Tires are goodyears & practically new. The truck is at my buddys shop right now & his apprentice says he wants them when I'm done parting it out. Given he had it towed back to his shop at no cost to me, I'm gonna give him the tires & let him get whatever he wants out of that guy.

It does have the 14 bolt axle. Didn't realize it would fetch quite that much though. I think I'll hit up some of the old boards I used to when I had my Jeep a few years ago.

Got a guy asked me for the PMD this morning.....never even knew that it was a common problem till I was looking through this board last week! It hasn't been relocated, but it is running fine. Told him to make an offer cause I wasn't sure of it's value. We'll see.

The interior is crap. Anybody wants it, they can have it. Not even gonna bother trying to sell it!

I'd prefer to sell it as a package; who wouldn't! But I never expected to. All the guys that ask for it think I'm nuts when I tell them I want more than a grand for it. More than happy to sell them the parts they want/need. And since I'm in no hurry to make it disappear, it's gonna sit till the parts go on their own, or someone pays a fair value for the sum of the parts!

Thanks again for all the tips. There's a lot less scrap in there than I was aware of.

No, it wasn't ex military; actually used to belong to a landscaper. I grabbed it cause it was diesel (and I was looking to make the switch from gas), it was big enough to fit the family & the dog, and well.... I'm a guy, it was a dump truck, and the wife was at home

And it's not just 6.5 owners who are cheap This being my first one, I was cheap long before getting mine!

First time diesel owner....found this forum by dumb luck when it threw a code for the MAP sensor (thanks google!); this was by far the best response I had to a question I've thrown up on a board. Now I can't wait for my next one!

Forgot to mention one thing. I've had a guy ask me a few times to sell him the VIN/title for the truck, and he doesn't want to take the truck or any of it's parts. Given I've only ever sold my vehicles in driveable condition & never as parts cars, I've never had to respond to anything like that before! I've been trying to find a way to sell it to him, but everything I see tells me it's gonna be a major pain after the good parts are gone to scrap it at the end. Nobody is willing to take the remnants as scrap unless it comes with the title. I may not be in a hurry to get rid of it, but I'm also in no hurry to put in the effort that would be required to scrap it as pieces without the title! Anybody know if it's possible to scrap it with the good parts gone & no title without having to cut it up into little pieces.... may be an Ontario specific problem.

I wouldn't.

Most places it's illegal to move the vin plate from one cab to another.

I'd tell him he can have the VIN if he takes the truck.

Selling him the vin knowing he's going to put it on a truck it doesn't belong to could net you a passel of legal problems.

However, what he does with it after he legally owns the truck and drives it away is no concern to you.

You also run into a problem when you try to scrap the truck and the yard won't take it because you can't prove you own it....

If you do have a place to store the truck.. at your house ... and have the time to part it out, first I would make a video of it running, what the inside looks like, even driving it to show that the tranny works. then start listing the truck in the for sell section on ALL the diesel sites, it will be a hassel to do all the question & answers, but lots of people do it and most wind up selling a lot of things. list it as a par tout on craigs list & ebay.

If you don't have that much time or don't want the trouble.... sell it as best you can.

if the turbo is in good shape, thats a easy 150$ buy it self.

Wish you were close. I'd buy that low milage truck for my own private parts store.
Why doesn't anybody list their location?

Odd....didn't get a notification of any new posts. Thought I'd check in & give a quick update.

Spent the last week pulling parts. Got rid of the motor with the turbo, manifolds & alternator for $1600. Another $800 for the dump box. And another couple hundred for some odds & ends (tail lights, door handle, etc). The starter & hitch are already spoken for bringing a couple more hundred! And the tires/wheels are expected to be sold on Monday for another $500!

All I've got left now of any real value is the tranny, rear axle & scrap metal. Taking tomorrow off & gonna pull the axle on Monday. Those couple pieces can sit in my shed till they sell. And the scrap metal goes on Tuesday! And even better discovery when I went to pull the motor was finding out that it was a freshly rebuilt tranny attached; looks basically new....and from what I'm able to gather, I'm gonna score bigger than expected on that one too...

Funny thing, nothing but low ball offers on everything till last Monday, then all of a sudden I got flooded with calls with real offers. All in all, much more profitable than I thought a couple weeks ago!

Thanks for all the advice. Now it's time to run out & buy a new one
