Default crappy mpg, suggestions?

So I took my 84 CUCV on a does trip last weekend, pulling my pop up. Got the same Mpg's as in the city. 12 Mpg at 55-65. Same on the return trip with out the camper. Trucks a 6.2 with a 3 speed th400, 3.08 gears. Any suggestions?

Are you sure it has 3.08 gears? A 84 CUCV should have a lot lower gear. Check air filter and fuel filters first there the most common problem for bad fuel economy.

I'll replace the fuel filter, it has a new air filter. The gears are 3.08, for economy, at least thats what i read on steel soldiers website.

I guess I'll start with the fuel filter, and check the IP timing

My 83 6.2 gets mid 20's with 4.10 gears you should do close to that. Does the truck blow any white smoke or chug?

No smoke while running, a little during cold starts, and under a load/uphill of course, then not much. Doesnt chug, I did turn the pump up a little, being old military it was de-tuned a lot. Going to change the fuel filter next I guess

Ok, i replaced the fuel filter, cut open the old one. Full of ****. Looked like old leaves in there.

Checked the timing mark on the IP, its clocked slighty to the drivers side (advanced) maybe the width of 2 timing lines

Doesn't the 6.2 have two fuel filters just behind the intake manifold??
