I'm a real newbie to the diesel world. Bought a 98 K2500 w/6.5 to pull my 8000# boat. First thing that happened was the vacuum pump went within the first month. Just installed the TM from Heath. Great product. I thought of making one myself but my time is worth more than the few bucks it cost for the TM. I got the replacement belt so I could remove the vacuum pump. I don't need it to sieze when I'm in the middle of nowhere. The more you can elliminate the less things to go wrong.

I put the heath boost control and the max e tork on my dually and it is probably the best money I have ever spent in upgrades, the truck pulls my 48' enclosed gooseneck with ease and it made the biggest difference in the hills,it hardly ever downshifts anymore or loses speed,if the cruise is on it usually picks up a mile or two per hour on the gps.And I also get a few miles per gallon better.

the kojo tune is from walking j designs. he has been changing his site alot in the past few days from not showing the tune seperate and only showing it with the a team turbo and now not showing at all. but id give him a call as this tune is cheapest and from what i understand is more versatile in choosing what you want may it be towing or just more power for fun. also if you run a a team turbo you dont need a waste gate. i have the the turbo master from heath and the performance tune and they are good but since the kojo is about a hundred less then heath and the att is about 800 a package of like 1100 for both i wish i had spent the extra and got the tune and turbo instead of tune and controller. maybe an option you can fund and would like to explore. thats what i woulda done in hindsight.

What symptoms will a bad waste gate give you? I have a 97 3500 that first thing in the morning it smokes bad, runs rough and no pedal response at all for the first couple minutes. I checked glow pludgs and they are all ok.

Check your crank case ventilation, the tuna can looking thing that is connecting you valve cover and intake if that is gummed up it will produce similar symptoms. Shoot some carb cleaner through it or just replace it.

No turbo response (ie: bad wastegate) will give you rolling black clouds on acceleration or climbing any kind of hill. Towing anything will also smoke.

It will also drive your egt's through the roof.

Possible causes (in no particular order other than #1):

1. Wastegate solenoid
2. Wastegate actuator
3. Vacuum pump
4. leaking vacuum lines
5. Seized wastegate
6. intake tract leak
6. turbo failure

Your starting issues sound like something else....
