Default Battery connection problems

Hey guys...a real newbie here when it comes to diesels and their setups. I have a 6.5 and I installed new wiring on both batteries, and going to the starter solenoid. When I tried to hook up the positive cable to the drivers side battery it sparked and then smoke started coming out from behind the motor and I was able to pull the cable off the terminal hopefully before too much damage was done. I am not sure what to do now, or what to check?? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

I would look at the cable at starter and make sure end not hitting the starter shorting out and check the cable all the way back up to battery check for cuts that maybe hitting the motor or frame
