Default What Torque Converter Do I Need?

I have a 1984 Chevy Van with a 6.2L 379 diesel in it.

The tranny in it is a Hydra Matic 9TU M7 . I changed the tranny years ago. I still have the old tranny and the torque converter fits both.

The problem I'm having is I got into a "Dumb" spell thinking I could just go down to the corner auto parts store, give them my vehicle make, year, engine and they would deliver a torque converter that fit and worked. "DIDN'T HAPPEN". The first torque converter only slipped on half way. I took it back thinking it was a factory defect. I got a second torque converter and it only slipped on half way also. I got my money back.

I went to the GM dealership and they said the torque converter was discontinued.

I went to O'Reillys and they said they had the torque converter in their system but it was not available from Pro King.

I looked up the torque converter on Napa and it was there. I'm going tomorrow or Tuesday to talk to Napa but I would like to have the spline count and any additional info needed. I don't know if the 84 diesels trannys take the 27 or 30 spline. I also would like to know if and what the differences are between a diesel and gas engine torque converter.

Thanks All!
