I just bought a 1983 Silverado 10 (1/2 ton). I bought it from a good friend who thought it had major problems &I I was going to part it out (needed all the beautiful rust free body parts. But it may very well just need a water pump. Anyway, I am wanting to reevaluate & perhaps fix it up. It is on it's 3d tranny with only 300 miles on it & as a 1 owner has been well maintained, no dents etc. torn interior is the worse of it (I hope)

6.2 are good motor gave us little more info on way think it may be water pump 6.2

For mpg i had old ford 6.9 motor with 3:07 gears it got 24 mpg

 

I think it may be the water pump because it looks like the pulley is leaking & pulley's don't leak. I bought it for a quick parting out as the body is flawless & 2 of us are hungry for rust free - everything. But if it is a water pump & get's phenomenal mileage?? I had never heard anything good about the 6.2 litre (or any GM) diesel.

 

If its just the pump its definitly worth keeping, as for the tranny thats very strange it keeps blowing them. Improper intall perhaps? its a very tough truck and 6.2's are good engines as long as you dont drive it like a sbc.

 

Yes it is possible to get in the high 20's with a 6.2. Mine on 35's with 4.1 gears gets 26. I have even head of them with od getting into the 30's. If its just a water pump I would fix it. Every thing you hear about 6.2's and 6.5's is true but blown way out of proportion. They are good engines especially in smaller trucks. I have had several of them make over 300k and have only had 1 actually loose a bottom end after a long time on the road.

 

thanks, Seller said she got 28 around here & over 30 on open road. it is 100% original 2 wheel drive with 3:06 gears. I am going to gamble $70 on water pump & go from there. It is just too clean to part out, which is what I bought it for.

People dont like what they dont understand. If you take time and research the truck you will find that its not a bad diesel.... just misunderstood. Like me.

Well first it is an 82 not an 83. I ordered a Shop manual (the real thing) on eBay before I wrench.

It has 230,000 miles with new tranny so I guess trannies are lasting 115K or so. Yes, I would prefer a manual but have a new automatic so will stick with it unless I fall in love with the truck & find a parts truck with pedals & ALL conversion components

I have a basic question about general troubleshooting & tools to carry. If a gas engine acts up, I check fuel & spark & go from there. I carry a small basic set of sockets./wrenches.

Now for a diesel (& a book for dummies may be recommended-if so mention author & where to get it) I am ignorant. I would hate to be stuck somewhere because I did not know to "blow on a hose" or some first diagnoses check.

So, my question is: What are some quick basic checks to run if, on the road you go from good running to not running, or bad running? What basic tools & testers should I carry? thanxxxx ... doberdawg
