Default Where to Start

So I found some time to try and get my '82 6.2 started and no surprise it wouldn't. The truck is parked a couple hours from where I live so I do not get much time to work on it until I can get it home. As it was I didn't have a lot of time to investigate many things today.

Basically when trying to start the motor it revs but will not turn over. While its revving it is pumping whiteish smoke out the exhaust (see pic). The previous owner appears to have put a switch in for the glo plugs but i was having a hard time tracing the wires cause it is a mess. In other words I can not say for sure the glo plugs were working but it was almost 50 degrees when I was trying to get it started. I checked the oil for signs of coolant in case it was a head gasket but the oil was clean and the radiator topped off. My other thought is that there might be water in the fuel. The diesel in there is not supper old but old enough I suppose for problems to start.

Another change the previous owner made was to add spin on fuel filters. For some reason though it appears there 2 different types of fuel water separators (see pic). Lastly there are two auto reset breakers mounted on the driver side wheel well/shroud, what could those be to?

I am heading back over there next weekend to see what I can do. I am limited time wise so I can't take on big undertakings to try and fix things. The property owner really wants it gone this upcoming weekend so any advice to help me get it running would be great.

If i was you try get old fuel out and put new in and change the fuel filter i don't see anything wrong with that style filter one thing am seeing it maybe just way you took the pic that is i see fuel going one side but seeing anything on the other side and if i was you do away with one of the filter just run of one intill get it started running then if want go with 2 filter

thing try getting going get some fresh fuel 5gal container take incoming feed line off before the pump and run line to fresh fuel container try starting it also try see if get glow plugs working 6.2 wasn't easy motor get started with out glow plugs

That filter head has three ports, 2 on one side and one on the other. The one on the left in the pic is blocked and the 2 ports on the right are being used. In that same pic to the right of the air filter housing is another fuel filter. This one is smaller and does not have the drain on it. Again it's hard to understand why previous owners did what the did.

Is there anything "special" about the glo plug relays or are they the same as generic relays? In other words are they application specific?

It seems to me maybe had water in fuel instead of droping tank added the extra filter to maybe try n filter it out so it couldnt get to tne engine just a theory but looks as if there was some issue to add extra filter.

The filter on the driver side was probably the secondary fuel filter mounted on the back of the intake original and moved to the fire wall because they are a pain to change. The one one the passenger side is not much more than a water separator and they look to be correct for a 82. You can use just a regular ford starter solenoid. If it was me I would make it have manual glow plugs and not automatic.

Cranking over with white smoke means your getting fuel. My first step would be to make sure you have power to the glow plugs. I would also make sure you are cranking plenty fast. If it sounds like it is cranking slow it will not start.

Not that all of an important question but what size fuse are you using for the the add a circuit? What kind of amperage can I expect the signle wire off the solenoid to carry, or how much the switch has to handle?

the main battery cable has the fuseable link not sure what size fuse to run and for the small wire think it 15 or 20 amp fuse

How come you use the extra solenoid instead of rewiring off the relay?

Ok so new update. I replaced the glow plug relay and now the light in the cab comes on. I can hear the relay click so I know its working but it will click every 5 to 10 seconds. Now when I try to start it its almost like the engine is pulsing. Looks like the batteries might be going out cause trying to start the truck so much I'm having to recharge the batteries a lot . I'm trying to do the manual glow plug conversion too but the switch is getting power but it doesn't seem to activate the glow plug relay.
