Brought home an 86 6.2 Suburban
I found this rig last week on craigslist and finally met up with the owner on it. Had not ran since summer and hasn't been driven more than around the block once every summer since 2005! Well, new batterys and some cranking got the beast running. Tomorrow I am taking into my auto tech class and going to throw it on the lift to check out the underside and start changing fluids in it.
Specs that I know (or was told)
-86 6.2 180k
-AT 3spd with a shift kit - no tach, but it sounds like the motor is about to redline before this thing shifts. 1st 0-15mph 2nd 15-37mph 3rd 40+ When it shifts it is a hard shift, snaps the neck if you aren't ready. Is this normal? I'm not a fan of the shifting
-4x4
-4.11 gears or 4.10
-A/C converted to R134a
-Defrost doesn't work - Floor and Vent do though
-Cruise control
I've put about 15 miles on it so far and am pretty excited about driving this old thing. What are some things I should know about it? Anything I should do to it right away besides fluid changes? Anyway to cheaply put a tach in? I'm afraid of what RPMs I'll see with the way this truck is shifting. I rebuild these engines for the military, but never messed with them in vehicles. The engine compartment appears to be stock.

Where can I find info on the axles, trans, and transfer case? Google hasn't been helpful yet
