I'm assuming you need a 14 bolt FF from a 3/4 ton? Check your local salvage yards. Shouldn't be too expensive, usually 200-300 for a 14FF. Where are you located? Also, why not just replace the bearings? The 14FF is wicked easy to work on.

Up Rear Axle Assembly

I already replaced the bearings seals, but on one side had to ding the axle tube due to bearing inner race slipping. Was told that this may not last long term, so now that bearing failed again, it is likely that the whole axle assembly needs to be replace. I am located in South Central Florida and have checked local salvage yards with no joy. I did find one in SD on e-Bay, so I was just wondering if someone had another idea. Thanks for the reply.

PS What does a 14FF designator mean?

Give me your zip code and I'll find what I can near to you. 14FF means 14 [bolt] full floating. It's the widely used, 3/4-1ton, 10.5" ring gear axle sought after by off roaders, haulers, rock crawlers, and anyone needing a tough axle capable of taking a beating and keep going strong. If you can, post a pic of the differential housing on your truck, just to be sure.

Just hang in there bro. The site I use to check the yards is down, but I'll check it again ASAP. I'm actually heading out tomorrow morning to pick up a 14FF from a yard by me. I'm sure I'll find one for you too. I'll check for both, but is yours a 3/4 ton, or 1 ton?

Very true, 14 bolts are super strong and just as common. You should have no trouble finding one local for cheap. Search for some local pick and pulls and you'll find one quick.

You want the following:
Chevy (equal to yours)-ton,
6 bolt removable pinion carrier (viewable from the fron of the axle)
14 bolt diff cover,
and removable axleshaft flanges at the wheels.

These are the features of the 14FF that will identify it. Site's still down, get back with you asap.

.......what the hell did you do to FUBAR a 14 bolt? ......had to ask.

Smile Rear Axle Assembly

Hey, I don't know if I did only what mechanic friend told me when replaced the rear seals and bearings last time. Apparently, the inner race on the outer bearing was slipping. Discovered during rear axle seal leak repair (replaced the rear axle seal twice). During same repair operation we replaced both bearings (inner and outer). Since the outer one was slipping, it was suggested to use a punch to create slight ding to provide point for bearing race to grab onto. By the way this axle assembly has 198K on it. I have no knowledge or understanding about this, but my friend is trustworthy and I believe knows what he was talking about when he said if the punch solution did not work then it would have to be replaced. At this point, I guess I need to figure if it is worth just replacing the bearings and seals along with the damaged axle nut and key (probably during the bearing failure and wheel pull out) and maybe not needed an axle assembly or replacing it now before another seal or bearing failure. As far as I know the threads are intact and the axle tube is still round (we used a micrometer). Only the outer thread or two are slightly misshaped due to the drive axle rod pull out and vehicle weight bearing on it.

Okay, here's what I found. I'll list it as vehicle, price, and who's got it.

89 Suburban C20,$call,Jims Auto Salvage-Sebring 1.800.282.4620
????rear axle, $300, A1A Auto Parts-Lakeland 1.800.922.9676
89 Suburban C20,$150,Auto Parts Pros-Lakeland 1.863.665.7278
83 truck C20 , $250,Guaranteed Auto and Truck Parts, Okeechobee 863.763.3211
88 Sub 20 ,$call, Lester's Salvage - St Petersburg 727.321.6601
90 Sub 20 ,$149.99, Best Auto And Truck Recyclers - Dade city 888.729.9700

There are a few others, but they're asking $500 to $600+ for theirs. Also, this is only a list of places that registered parts to fit your vehicle so it will take visual inspection to ID the axle. Just look for a six bolt removable pinion carrier in the front of the axle.
