Default coolant temp problem

alright guys i got a problem on my truck i bypassed a while ago and now i want to fix it. with a brand new temp sensor in the truck at about 160* or any warmer than that, it shows on the dash its at like 260 tached out and the check gauges light is on. i put a mechanical gauge in it and it it wrks fine and runs fine, but i would rather use the sensor on my dash. anyone know what would cause the gauge on the cluster to be bad?

Does the sending unit in the cummins send the same signal range as the gauge receives. If that makes any sens. When the sending unit send a signal is it right for it but for the gauge that same signal is 260.

dodges uses a hot and cold not numbers. and i know the sensor works. ive ohmed it out at like 10 different water temps and it works perfect. and when i send the ohm load to the cluster it goes wacky. i dont know if this is right im just using it as an example:

say 5 ohms is cold like truck is off (160*) and 50 ohms is as hot as it gets (260*). when i give it 7 ohms it shows like 200* and if i were to give it 15 ohms it gives it 260* degrees. it seems like the thermo resistor or something is bad but i dont know where it is or how to test it
