hi today i am going to take a jimmy for a test drive.im hoping to replace my cummins with it.it is an 84 gmc 6.2l diesel with a 700r4 auto o/d transmission.can any previous owners tell me about this drivetrains reliability and what you think a fair price is.the odometer reads 70xxx so its either that or 170xxx.the listing price is 3200.what should i offer him? i trust your guys' opinion, and know you wont steer me wrong.thanks mike.

The engine is reliable the trans. is not. The problem is that it could have 70k or 170k or 270k you see where I am going. It really depends on what kind of shape it is in. Is the body good does it run good? I would have a tough time giving 3200 for it unless it was darn near in perfect shape. I would fell more comfortable around the 1500-2000 range but I also gave $400 for my 98 so I don't buy things unless I basically steal them.
The thing you have to remember when going to a 6.2 is they are good for dependability and fuel mileage and nothing else. It will never make 500 hp unless you have a million dollars to dump in it. Also don't buy it if you are planing to pull heavy trailers with it.

yeah i have heard that they are pretty sluggish.i have my brothers 95 7.3 f250,my dads 2002 duramax ,and our 2006 e350 van too tow anything heavy so it does not have to be a tow vehicle. As for the body it is in fine shape not a dent.fine looking vehicle if i do say so . but for the tranny , i have read alot of praise for the 700re.what kind of experiences have you had?when i get it first thing i will do is install a shift kit.does that change your opinion on its reliability?
