Default what size socket

I am going to be replacing the front rotors on my 93 gmc c3500 dually and do not know what size the retaining nut is on the axle holding on the rotors. I know that I have to take off the cap to get to it, but I am not sure what size I need to take them off.

Also, how do I figure out what size pads I need to put on (2 1/2 or 3 1/2)? Napa has both sizes, and without taking off the caliper and bringing it with me, I am not sure. I guess it is based on what size rear drums I have. Not sure of that either. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

as for the front, you wont need a socket, only a pair of channel locks, the nuts don't need a boat load of pressure, they are only to seat adn hold the bearing still. As for your other question, i'm assuming your talking about the rear shoes, if so you will need to pull the drums off and measure the with of the shoes that are on there, thats where the 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 come from

Thanks for the info. If it is like that, I can just remove the nut and take the brake pad out of the caliper and take it with me. That way I don't have to remove the rear wheels.

I only have an O'reilly's near me, and they don't rent out that tool. Others, yes, but not that one. It is not expensive to purchase, but I still don't know what size. I guess I could drive the truck there, if the the channel lock thing doesn't work.
