oil pressure gauge dropes to zero when i slow down
I have 2 oil pressure gauges the stock reads 40 and custom reads about 30 when at idle when accelerating both go up another 10 psi but once i hit the breaks to slow down they both will drop to 0 untilli come to a stop then they both go back to normal? also tach just stopped working is this a electrical problwm what you think?

no the one on my steering colum goes to the rear of the motor and im assuming the stock one goes where ever stock goes i havnt traced it yet. the the custom one has a copper wire goin to the back of the motor. the motor only has 58000 miles. but when it dropes to 0 there is no sputter in it no hessitation it runs fun they just go to 0.

If both gauges go to different sensors then we can rule out the sensors if they go to the same on the it may be the sensor. For some reason it sounds like the oil is running away from the pick up. Does the oil pan have any dents in it? If the oil pan is easy to remove if it is 4wd it is if it's 2wd it may not be. If it was my truck I am taking the pan off. The 83 I have had the oil pump pick up fall off In the end the engine spun 7 rod bearings. I don't want to make you do any more work than you have to but I am gun shy to that stuff.

is the custom oil gauge electric? if it is did you wire them on the same circuit. if the tach isnt working its an electrocal issue or a crazy concidence

I'm a Cummins guy cross-posting (is that like cross dressing? ) but I've worked on everything over the years.
First question I ask is which oil filter are you running? If it is a Fram, switch it and try again. They are notorious for loosing pressure because of faulty by-pass valves.
Have you checked oil pressure with a mechanical gauge? They should be the most accurate. You could plumb one under the hood for a test by using a T fitting where you plumb in the electric version.
Otherwise, if you have a ton of miles, your clearances internally could be opened up enough to loose oil pressure when the pump is not spinning fast. That generally means time for a rebuild.

the custom gauge is hard wired to the back of the motor som in thinking that that is considered a manual one?
the tach comes on when it wants here recently. im assuming its a bad connection the alternator.
truck only has 58000 miles
i do have a fram filter. would a k&n be bettter? or? im new to this diesel thing
is there a way to tell if the oil pump is out or going out?
