did you replace the fuel filter and make sure the fuel system is clean. there is a sock in the tank that can get clogged sometimes

he probably still has air in the fuel system. have him turn the key on so the lift pump runs and unscrew the bleeder screw on the fuel filter till diesel comes out. then screw it abck down and start the motor. then inscrew the t-handle at the front of the engine till you see the diesel come out and wait for the air bubbles to get out. then the sytem should be air free.

another thing you can try is to turn the valve on the front of the motor and drain the fuel in a jar. let it sit over night inside and look at it in the morning. if you can see clear down at the bottom you got water. add some alchohol and itll clear it up a little and it will run on it. done it many times.
