Questions about 6.2 and 6.5
#2
Are they durable? Depends on what you do with them. The military has gotten zillions of miles out of them, but don't be expecting a powerhouse. For a daily driver that sips on good ol #2, they are a pretty good mill, but not without a few kinks.
Can you get parts for them easily? Heath Diesel (I think that's what it is) has most anything you could think for these engines. He recently ran his 300+hp 6.5 at the salt flats in search of a land speed record. Check it out his website if you are interested in the aftermarket.
Are you better off with a Duramax? Again, depends on what you want to achieve and what you are doing with it. Take in mind that if you are looking for a mill for a transplant project, a Duramax has a lot more computer stuff to go with it than the old 6.2 and 6.5 engines. However, if you're in the market for a new truck, it's hard to beat a Duramax/Allison combination...

if you have decent mechanical skills and a little know how on the 6.5 you can do basiclly any repair on them. there cheap and there is a ton parts out there for them. if you do all the maintenance mods like i have you can have a engine that lasts 300k miles before a rebuild.
that being said nothing beats the performance of a dmax but if your on a budget and dont want a big hp diesel truck i would stick with the 6.5
